WSOC: Huskies Host Grambling Before Heading to Abilene

HCU will play GSU for the first time since 2011 before taking on former SLC foe

HOUSTON – This Friday marks the 2025 home opener for HCU women's soccer when the Huskies host Grambling State at Sorrels Field at 5:00 p.m. before hitting the road to face off against former Southland Conference member Abilene Christian on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

The Huskies (1-1) opened the year with a pair of games away from home, first falling to crosstown rival Rice, 2-1, before completing a 3-2 comeback win against Tarleton State. Four different HCU players have scored goals with senior Alexia Murillo earning SLC Defensive Player of the Week honors, scoring against Rice. In the win over the Texans, newcomers Isabella Dillow, Madison Stormberg and Haydan Erck all found the net.

Grambling (1-0-1) began the season with a 1-1 draw at LSU Shreveport before returning home and defeating SLC member Nicholls, 3-0. The Tigers out-shot the visiting Colonels, 18-4, with eight shots on goal while holding Nicholls to just one attempt on target. Sophomore Olivia Kowall netted a goal and was also credited with an assist in the win.

ACU (1-1) opened the season on the road, first earning a 1-0 victory at UTEP and then dropping a 1-0 decision at New Mexico State. Senior forward Amelia Leggett netted the game-winner against UTEP. In goal, three different goalies have all played at least 45 minutes, allowing just the one goal while making seven saves.

HCU is 2-0 all-time against Grambling with the two meetings coming during the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The Huskies won 4-0 at Sorrels Field before earning a 2-1 overtime road win the following year. HCU holds a 3-5-1 record all-time against the Wildcats, playing to a 0-0 draw at home last year. The Huskies have yet to record their first win in Abilene, however, with an 0-4 road record against ACU.

Next week, the Huskies are on their home turf for two games beginning with a 5:00 p.m. matchup with College of Charleston on Thursday, Aug. 28, followed by a Sunday, Aug. 31, 1:00 p.m. matinee matchup against Southern.
