BSB: Lamar Shuts Out HCU in Series Opener

Huskies aim to regroup after quiet opener as pivotal Southland series continues Friday

BEAUMONT, Texas – A tough night at the plate spelled defeat for HCU as the Huskies were shut out, 10-0, by Lamar on Thursday evening at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Lamar (38-15, 18-10 SLC) struck in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on an HCU (26-21, 17-11 SLC) error to plate an unearned run. The Cardinals added another in the second thanks to an RBI infield single from Tab Tracy. Tracy struck again in the fourth, laying down a bunt single to score Zane Spinn, stretching the lead to 3-0.

While HCU struggled to find momentum offensively, managing just one hit across eight innings, Lamar steadily extended its lead. The Cardinals plated three more in the seventh, including a sacrifice fly by Matt Ryan and a pair of RBI singles from Brayden Evans and Reese Beheler.

The game broke open in the eighth when Lamar sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs on a fielder's choice, a bases-loaded walk, and Beheler's two-run single to right. Beheler led the way for the Cardinals with three hits and four RBIs, while Tracy added two hits, two RBIs, and two stolen bases.

Houston Christian's Parker Edwards (1-4) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) across 6.1 innings. Riely Hunsaker (4-2) earned the win for Lamar with five scoreless frames, and Peyton Havard notched his fifth save after shutting down the Huskies over the final three innings.

The Huskies will look to bounce back on Friday, May 9, at 6:00 p.m. as the series continues at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont. The game will stream on ESPN+.
