BSB: Huskies Split Saturday Doubleheader with Islander

Dutka’s walk-off homer seals Game 1 win before HCU falls in Game 2

HOUSTON – Houston Christian University baseball split a Saturday doubleheader against Southland Conference rival Texas A&M–Corpus Christi at Husky Field, earning a thrilling 4–3 walk-off win in Game 1 before dropping the nightcap 5–1.

In the opener, HCU (25–19, 16–9 SLC) struck early and late to secure a dramatic win. Kenneth Dutka launched a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Huskies past the Islanders (16–28, 8–17 SLC), 4–3.

The Huskies got on the board in the second inning. Parker Edwards led off with a walk, followed by back-to-back singles from Luke Bard and Jeremy Rader, with Rader bringing in Edwards to make it 1–0.

The Islanders tied the game in the fifth on an RBI triple from Isaac Webb, then took a 2–1 lead in the sixth. HCU responded in the bottom half of the frame as Jack Walker drew a leadoff walk, scored on a double by Rhett Hendricks, and Bard followed with his third hit of the day to bring in Hendricks and reclaim the lead at 3–2.

Corpus Christi tied the game again in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Cade Sanchez. But with the game knotted at three in the ninth, Dutka sent the first pitch he saw over the right field wall to seal the win for HCU.

Edwards pitched 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out five. Louis Castano closed it out with two hitless innings of relief to improve to 5–1 on the season.

In Game 2, the Islanders used timely hitting and strong pitching to earn a 5–1 victory.

Corpus Christi scored twice in the second inning and added three more in the sixth to pull away. Webb once again led the offense with three hits and three RBIs, including a two-run double.

The Huskies' lone run came in the fourth when Hendricks scored on Katcher Halligan's RBI double. HCU had opportunities throughout the game but left eight runners on base and grounded into two double plays.

Starter Joshua Caravalho (8–3) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) over six innings. David Dean earned the win for AMCC, and Matthew Molina notched the save with 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.

With the split, HCU moves to 25–20 overall and 16–10 in Southland Conference play. The Islanders improve to 17–28 and 9–17 in the league.

The series concludes tomorrow, Sunday, May 4 at 2 p.m. at Husky Field. It marks the final home game of the season for the Huskies.
