BSB: Huskies Top Bearkats on the Road

Dutka drives in three, bullpen holds strong as HCU takes down Sam Houston, 6–3

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – HCU Baseball powered past Sam Houston, 6–3, on Tuesday evening at Don Sanders Stadium, improving to 27–23 on the season. A four-run fourth inning and clutch bullpen work helped the Huskies secure the non-conference win on the road.

The Huskies struck first in the opening frame thanks to some aggressive baserunning. With Tevis Payne on third and Parker Edwards on first, the duo executed a double steal, and Edwards swiped second while Payne dashed home to put HCU up 1–0.

In the top of the second, Jeremy Rader singled and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Trevor Roper capitalized with a single to right field to drive in Rader, extending the Huskies' lead to 2–0.

Sam Houston (12–40) responded in the bottom half of the inning. Jace Martinez led off with a double and later scored on a groundout by Sam Lee to cut the deficit in half. The Bearkats tied the game an inning later on a solo home run by Hunter Autrey.

But HCU blew the game open in the fourth. After back-to-back singles from Rader and Graham Laxton and a walk to Roper, Kenneth Dutka laced a triple down the right field line, clearing the bases and giving the Huskies a 5–2 lead. Jack Walker followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Dutka and cap off the four-run frame.

Sam Houston pushed one more run across in the sixth when Martinez scored on a double by Parker Blackman, but that was all the Bearkats could manage. The HCU bullpen locked things down from there.

In the seventh, the Bearkats got a runner in scoring position with no outs, but reliever Josh Hamilton and the Huskies' defense shut the door. HCU stranded two in the top half of the inning after putting runners on second and third with one out.

The Huskies threatened again in the eighth with a leadoff walk from Laxton, but couldn't capitalize. Sam Houston managed a leadoff bunt single in the bottom half but grounded into a fielder's choice to end the frame.

In the ninth, HCU went down quietly, and the Bearkats looked to rally one last time. They put two runners on base with one out, but closer Ben Norton came in and retired the next two batters to notch his seventh save of the season.

Dutka led the way offensively for HCU, finishing 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs. Walker also collected two hits and an RBI, while Payne doubled and scored twice.

On the mound, starter Jacob Cyr worked four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with four strikeouts. Jett Feltman (2–2) earned the win in relief, and five relievers combined to allow just one run over the final five innings.

HCU, seeded sixth in the Southland Conference Tournament, will play on Thursday, May 15 at 1 pm against third-seeded Lamar University in the first game of the Edinburg Bracket hosted by UTRGV. The host and second-seeded Vaqueros take on seventh-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6 pm.

The other bracket for the SLC Tournament will be played in Hammond, Louisiana at top-seeded Southeastern Louisiana.  Fourth-seeded McNeese and fifth-seeded Northwestern State battle at 1 pm on Thursday, followed by the host Lions taking on eighth-seeded New Orleans.

The winners of the two brackets will meet at the higher seed in a best two-of-three championship series beginning on Thursday, May 22.
