SB: HCU drops series finale at Nicholls

Huskies return home for weekend series with league-leading McNeese

THIBODAUX, Louisiana --- A big third inning by the hosts put the game out of reach, as Houston Christian University lost the series finale to Nicholls State University 10-0 at Swanner Field on Wednesday afternoon. HCU mustered just two hits as the Colonels ran their winning streak to 12.

With one out in the second inning, the Colonels used five consecutive hits to put up a three-spot and take the early advantage. Laylin Sturm singled with the bases loaded to drive in two runs, and Claire Sisco got the first extra-base knock of the stretch, a double to left center to chase Strum across the dish.

In the third, Nicholls struck again, taking advantage of a pair of errors that put two runners on with one out. Lilianna Robledo then hit a single down the right field line that made the score 5-0. A few batters later, Sisco drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to six. Erin Krause then doubled to score two more and Reagan Helfin pushed the lead to double-digits with a two-run single to left.

HCU managed just two hits in the contest, one each from Haylie Savage and Karlie Barba. Cara Pitman was tagged with the loss, falling to 6-7 on the season as one of three hurlers used on the afternoon.

Molly Yoo picked up her second victory of the series to move to 9-7 on the campaign, needing just 68 pitches while walking one and fanning five. Five players drove in two runs apiece, led by Krause and Robledo, who each contributed two hits for the Colonels (22-20 / 12-6 SLC).

The Huskies fall to 13-25 on the season and 6-12 in Southland action. HCU will return home to finish off this rugged stretch of nine games in 10 days when it hosts league-leading McNeese State University this coming weekend. The two teams will play a twin-bill on Friday starting at 4 pm with an "Alumni Day" series finale set for Saturday at noon.
