SB: Huskies corralled by McNeese in doubleheader

League-leading Cowgirls gallop past HCU for sweep; series finale set for noon Saturday

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University dropped a doubleheader to league-leading McNeese State University on Friday, falling 12-2 and 11-0 at Husky Field.

Both games were close until the Cowgirls galloped away in the final two frames of each end of the twin-bill. The visitors scored a combined 17 runs in the sixth and seventh innings of the pair of contests allowing them to keep pace with Southeastern at the top of the standings.

The Huskies are now 13-27 overall and 6-14 in league play while McNeese goes to 30-17 and 16-4 in the SLC. The two teams will wrap up the three-game series with an "Alumni Day" finale at noon on Saturday.

GAME 1

McNeese jumped out to the quick lead, as Rylie Bouvier homered to right field with one aboard to put the visitors up 2-0. Two more would cross in the third on an RBI double by Jada Munoz, who later scored on an error.

Haylie Savage cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth, mashing her third homer of the season off the top of the scoreboard in right field. The Pokes got the runs back in the sixth and then some, putting up a five-spot in the inning, highlighted by a three-run jack by Nyjah Fontenot to right center. A two-run double by Delaney Dunham down the left field line in the seventh closed the scoring.

Haylie Savage went 3-4 with the homer and two RBI to pace the Huskies. It was the 10th three-hit game of her career and 12th such outing with more than three hits. The homer ties her for seventh on the all-time charts at HCU.

Chloe Foster had two hits for HCU while Ella Herrewig went 1-3 with a run scored. Cara Pitman (6-8) took the loss, going 5.2 innings giving up just three earned runs and matching a career-high with four strikeouts.

Delaney Dunham had a three-hit game with four RBI while Nyjah Fontenot was 2-4 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored. Kadence Williams (9-7) went five innings for the win.

GAME 2

McNeese took advantage of an error to score the first run of the second game, then made it 2-0 in the fourth on an RBI single by Sarah Allen.

The floodgates opened in the seventh, with the Pokes putting up a nine on the board, seven of which were unearned. The big blow came off the bat of Delaney on a bases-loaded double to center in which she was gunned down at third base for the final out of the frame.

HCU had just two hits in the game coming from Savage and Jaycee Foor. Leah Hammack (5-9) pitched admirably, going 6.1 innings on 102 pitches, allowing just three earned while scattering eight hits.

Maddie Taylor won her league-leading 13th game of the season, going six innings with four strikeouts. She was backed by Delaney, who drove in three more runs, and two -hit nights from Brylie Fontenot and Sarah Allen.
