SB: Huskies thwarted by league-leading Cowgirls in series finale

HCU travels to Lamar for pre-Easter series next Thursday and Friday

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University was thwarted by league-leading McNeese State University in the series finale at Husky Field on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-3 as the Cowgirls finished off the weekend sweep.

McNeese put up three runs in the first inning and never looked back. Nyjah Fontenot and Rylie Bouvier cranked back-to-back RBI doubles and Bouvier later stole home as part of a double-steal to give the visitors a 3-0 cushion.

Maddy Bailey reached on an error in the third to score Karlie Barba with HCU's first run, cutting the lead to 3-1. The Pokes got that run back plus one more in the fifth, when Fontenot reached on a fielding error that allowed Kassidy Chance to score all the way from first base. Bouvier then singled to bring in Fontenot for a 5-1 lead. That lead extended to 7-1 on a two-run homer by Jada Munoz to left center in the seventh.

The Huskies got two runs in the seventh as Barba scored on a passed ball and Maddy Bailey came across on an RBI groundout by Keely Castillo, but that was all HCU would get as McNeese's Ryann Schexnayder closed the door for her league-leading seventh save of the season.

Bailey, Barba and Chloe Foster each had two hits for the Huskies while Leah Hammack went 1-3. Hammack (5-10) was saddled with the loss, while Cara Pitman tossed six innings of relief allowing just two unearned runs. Haylie Savage was 0-2 with two walks in her quest for 200 career hits, now just nine away from that plateau.

Nyjah Fontenot was 2-4 with three runs scored, Kassidy Chance went 2-3 and Jada Munoz went 2-4 with her 11th homer of the season. Maddie Taylor (14-6) earned her second victory of the series for the Cowgirls (31-17 / 17-4 SLC), who remain tied with Southeastern for first in the Southland.

HCU (13-28 / 6-15 SLC) will return to action next week at Lamar University in Beaumont for a three-game series prior to Easter Sunday. A twin-bill on Thursday at 3 pm will be followed by the series finale at 3 pm on Friday.
