SB: Huskies rally past Cardinals in nightcap to earn twin-bill split

HCU scores six in final two at-bats to snap skid after Lamar takes opener

BEAUMONT, Texas --- An RBI double by Hanna York in the seventh capped off a late rally as Houston Christian University captured an exciting 11-10 victory over Lamar University in the nightcap of a Thursday doubleheader at LU Softball Complex.

HCU scored six times in their final two at-bats of the second game to complete the come-from-behind win that snapped a 10-game losing streak. The Huskies had fallen 7-1 in the opener to the Cardinals.

The Huskies are now 14-29 overall and 7-16 in the Southland  while Lamar goes to 27-21 and 14-9 in the league. The two teams will wrap up the three-game series with a Good Friday finale at noon.

GAME 1

The Huskies trailed just 1-0 in the opener heading to the fifth, when the Cardinals put a three-spot on the board to take control. Jayne Sepulveda and Veronica Harrison provided back-to-back run-scoring doubles as LU took at 4-0 lead.

Lamar put another trio of runs up in the sixth, again highlighted by Sepulveda and Harrison, who had a two-run double and an RBI single respectively.

HCU got a run in the seventh on Karlie Barba's second homer of the season, then loaded the bases, but could do no further damage. The Huskies had just three hits in the game and Cara Pitman (6-9) took the defeat.

Sepulveda was 4-4 with two doubles, two runs and three RBI and Harrison went 2-3 with two RBI to back Reagan Smith (9-6), who went the distance on a three-hitter with three K's.

GAME 2

The Huskies took an early lead in the nightcap when Haylie Savage scored on a wild pitch in the first innings. In the second, Jocelyn Briseno laced an RBI triple and Karlie Barba followed with a two-run double to put HCU ahead 4-0.

Lamar would get all four of those runs back in the third on a grand slam by Cala Wilson. HCU retook the lead in the top of the fourth when Maddy Bailey beat out a fielder's choice that allowed Karlie Barba to score for a 5-4 advantage. In the bottom of the frame, the Cardinals would push three across, highlighted by another RBI hit from Sepulveda, who then scored on a double by Trinity Brandon for a 7-5 lead for the hosts. The lead grew to 8-5 in the fifth on an RBI single from Ava Blakely.

HCU then put up another crooked number in the sixth, with five Huskies crossing the pay station to reclaim the lead. Karlie Barba had a two-run double to cut the deficit to 8-7, and Hanna York brought her in with a sacrifice fly to knot things up at eight apiece.

The Huskies weren't done there, as Jocelyn Briseno's chopper up the middle glanced off the pitcher's glove allowing two runs to score for a 10-8 lead for the visitors. Lamar came right back, using a bases loaded walk and sacrifice fly to tie things up at 10 heading to the final frame.

Barba doubled with one out, and one out later, Hanna York provided the biggest hit of the game, yanking a double into the left field corner to score Barba with the eventual game-winning run. The Cardinals went down in order for the first time in the contest in the seventh, with Cara Pitman providing the final out with a nice play on a ball in front of the plate and a throw just in time to end the game.

Karlie Barba had her first career four-hit game, going 4-5 with a career-best four RBI to lead a season-best 14-hit HCU offense. Heidi Maytum went 2-4 with three runs scored, Jocelyn Briseno went 2-4 with two RBI and Ella Herrewig added two hits.

Pitman (7-9) earned the win with 3.2 innings of relief, the third of three HCU pitchers.

Sepulveda had her second four-hit game of the twin-bill, going 4-5 with two runs and an RBI to finish a 8-9, four-RBI day. Cala Wilson was 3-4 with the grand slam while Kaylee Cuevas (1-2), the fourth of five hurler used by Lamar, took the loss with 1.1 innings of relief, giving up three runs.
