SB: Huskies drop both ends of road twin-bill to red hot Colonels

Series finale on Wednesday at 1 pm before returning home over weekend

THIBODAUX, Louisiana --- Houston Christian University dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the hottest team in the Southland, falling 4-0 and 3-1 to Nicholls State University on Tuesday at Swanner Field.

The Huskies are now 13-24 overall on the season and 6-11 in conference action. The Colonels have now won 11 games in a row to climb over the .500 mark on the season while running their SLC mark to 11-6.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.

GAME 1

The Huskies and Colonels engaged in a pitchers duel for the first four innings, with the hosts holding a 1-0 lead on an Erin Krause RBI double in the third. In the fifth, Nicholls put the game out of reach with a three-spot with Krause again providing the big hit, a two-run single to make the score 3-0. Bryne Songy added an RBI single to center to score Krause with the final tally.

Haylie Savage went 2-3 for the Huskies, who managed just one extra-base hit in the contest. Leah Hammack (5-8) went the distance, scattering seven hits and four runs with two walks and a strikeout.

Songy had three hits and Krause two and three RBI to back the complete game shutout by Molly Yoo (8-7).

GAME 2

Nicholls put up single runs in the first and second innings, both on singles by Krause, to take a 2-0 lead.

HCU would get one run back in the fifth. Ella Herrewig singled and stole second base and then came around on an RBI single by Keely Castillo to cut the lead in half.

The Colonels would get the run right back in the bottom of the frame, as an RBI double by Riley Rutherford scored pinch-runner Sydney Mann to make it 3-1.

Herrewig went 2-3 for HCU and Castillo was 1-3 with an RBI. Cara Pitman (6-6) gave up seven hits and three runs, two earned while fanning two with no walks.
