BSB: Huskies Fall to No. 2 Texas on the Road

HCU held to two runs in road battle against powerhouse Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – HCU baseball faced a tough challenge Tuesday night, going up against the second-ranked Texas Longhorns and falling 12-2 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Huskies (20-11) managed four hits in the loss, with Kenneth Dutka, Jack Walker, Luke Bard, and Trevor Roper each notching one. Walker and Tevis Payne drove in HCU's two runs, while five different players drew walks. The Huskies had opportunities against the Longhorns (27-4) but left right runners stranded.

HCU threatened early, putting runners on the corners in the top of the first, but Texas escaped the jam and responded in the second. After a scoreless opening frame, the Longhorns erupted for six runs in the second inning, fueled by a two-run double from Peyton Farmer IV and an HCU error.

Texas extended its lead in the third with a solo home run from Kimble Schuessler and added two more unearned runs on RBIs by Ethan Mendoza and Easton Winfield.

The Huskies showed signs of life in the top of the third when Roper and Dutka led off with back-to-back hits to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Payne and Walker each followed with RBI groundouts to cut the deficit to 6-2, but the Longhorns quickly regained control. Mendoza and Winfield continued to pace the Texas offense, adding insurance runs in the middle innings as the Longhorns pulled away.

Texas added three more runs over the final three innings to seal the win, despite HCU's efforts to generate offense.

Up next, the Huskies return to Southland Conference play aiming to maintain their spot atop the league standings with a home series against Northwestern State, beginning Friday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m. Game two is set for Saturday at 2 p.m., and the series wraps up Sunday at 2 p.m., all at Husky Field.
