SB: Strong pitching, timely hitting paces HCU to twin-bill sweep of ETAMU

Series and regular season finale at noon on "Senior Day" Saturday

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University used strong pitching from freshman hurlers Cara Pitman and Leah Hammack, and got timely hitting to take both ends of a twin-bill on Friday at Husky Field, defeating East Texas A&M University 2-1 and 3-2. The Huskies limited the Lions to seven hits in each game, and got a walk-off single in the nightcap from Jocelyn Briseno to take the first two games of the series.

HCU is now 17-30 overall and improves to 10-16 in the Southland while East Texas A&M University falls to 9-40 overall and 5-21 in the league. The victories secured the seventh spot in next week's SLC Tournament, while ETAMU heads into the final day of the season still looking to slide into the final spot in the field.

GAME 1

Cara Pitman outdueled ETAMU's Kate Houser in the opener, evening her season record at 9-9. She tossed 95 pitches and scattered seven hits while allowing just the lone run, that coming on a leadoff homer to Tatum Wright. Houser was solid in defeat, giving up nine hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts.

The Huskies knotted things up in the third inning as Chloe Foster doubled down the right field line and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Jaycee Foor. Jocelyn Briseno then hit a ball up the middle that glanced off Houser's glove for an infield RBI single that brought Foster home.

Maddy Bailey then cranked her first homer in the fourth, a missile to right center that cleared the wall with ease, giving HCU the lead for good, 2-1. She finished the game 2-3, joining Hanna York and Ella Herrewig with two hits.

Charli Anger and KK Cosek each had two hits for the Lions, while Tatum had her 10th homer of the year.

GAME 2

Game two saw the Huskies get out on the front foot in the first frame. Heidi Maytum reached on a fielder's choice. She would come around to score when Karlie Barba laced a double to left field to tie the game, and when the throw home went awry, Barba crossed home plate as well for a 2-1 lead.

After going down in each of the first three innings on 25 total pitches, ETAMU got one of the runs back, again off the bat of Wright, who led off the inning with a deep homer to left. The Lions then put two more on before a fielder's choice putout at third ended the threat.

In the seventh, the visitors would get the tying tally as Anger led off with a double to left center and came around to score when Emma Rodrigues reached on a throwing error. Again the Lions would lead two stranded, sending the game to the bottom of the seventh.

Ella Herrewig led off the inning by reaching on an error. Pinch-hitter Mackenzie Morris then sacrificed her to second. With two outs in the inning, it was up to Briseno, who laced a single right back where it came from, sending Herrewig around third and to the plate with the game-winner.

Hammack sat at right at 50 pitches through five innings before grinding through the final two innings to earn her sixth win of the season. She scattered seven hits on 92 total pitches and walked one.

Briseno had her third two-hit game in her last five outings, going 2-3 with an RBI. The Huskies only had five hits in the game, getting one each from Savage, Maytum and Barba.

Wright finished 2-4 with her 11th homer for the Lions. Julia Sanchez settled in after the rough first inning, allowing just five hits in 6.2 innings while fanning five.
