BSB: HCU Falls in Tight 1-0 Battle Against SLU

The Huskies come out on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel despite a brilliant start by Parker Edwards

HOUSTON – HCU Baseball fell in a classic pitcher's duel Friday night at Husky Field, where offense was scarce and every at-bat carried weight with visiting Southeastern emerging with a 1-0 win.

The lone run of the game came in the top of the fourth inning when Southeastern (32-10, 17-5) managed to string two of their three hits in the game together. TJ Salvaggio singled with two outs and two pitches later scored on a double down the right field line by Conner O'Neal, giving Southeastern a narrow 1-0 lead.

HCU (22-17, 14-8 SLC) starting pitcher Parker Edwards delivered a gem on the mound, tossing a complete game while allowing just three hits and striking out nine with three walks. The senior right-hander kept hitters off balance all night, stranding runners in the fifth and sixth innings to keep the Huskies in striking distance.

SLU's Brennan Stuprich matched him on the bump, going 7.2 scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and striking out six. He worked out of a jam in the third after a walk and a single put two Huskies aboard, then navigated another threat in the seventh following a leadoff double by Rhett Hendricks. Brady St. Pierre came in to finish the job, striking out two of the four batters he faced to earn the save.

Despite several hard-hit balls, the Huskies couldn't break through. Their best scoring chances came in the third and seventh innings, but SLU's timely defense and clutch pitching secured the shutout.

HCU will look to bounce back on Saturday with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m. at Husky Field.
