BSB: Huskies Drop Series Finale at New Orleans

HCU erases five-run deficit but falls 6-5 as Privateers complete the sweep

NEW ORLEANS, La. – HCU baseball mounted a mid-game rally but ultimately came up just short in a 6-5 loss to New Orleans on Saturday afternoon at Maestri Field, as the Huskies were swept in the three-game Southland Conference series.

The Privateers struck first with a solo home run from Bryce Calloway in the bottom of the second. They capitalized on a pair of errors in the third to tack on two unearned runs and added two more in the fourth — aided by a wild pitch and another defensive miscue — to jump out to a 5-0 lead.

The Huskies began to chip away in the fifth. Trevor Roper got HCU on the board with an RBI single, followed by a groundout RBI from Kenneth Dutka and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Luke Bard to make it 5-3.

HCU carried that momentum into the sixth, when Tevis Payne ripped a two-run double down the left field line to bring home Jeremy Rader and Katcher Halligan, tying the game at 5-5.

The tie was short-lived, however, as UNO regained the lead in the seventh with a groundout RBI from Bryan Loriga that scored Dalton Hurst.

HCU starter Joshua Caravalho went 7.0 innings, allowing six runs — only three earned — on nine hits. Ben Smith came on in relief to toss a scoreless eighth. Offensively, Rader led the way with a 3-for-5 day and two runs scored, while Payne recorded two RBI and a stolen base.

Despite their push in the middle innings, the Huskies were held off the board the rest of the way, as UNO's bullpen held firm to close out the win and complete the series sweep.

HCU now turns its attention to a midweek matchup at Baylor on Tuesday, April 22, before returning home for a weekend Southland Conference series against Southeastern Louisiana beginning Friday, April 25, at Husky Field.
