BATON ROUGE, La. – The Huskies' No. 1 and No. 5 pairs both go 2-0 as HCU's beach volleyball team finished out day two of the LSU Battle on the Bayou with a win over Southern Miss and a loss to South Carolina.
The Huskies (11-15) took on South Carolina (11-14) in the morning, falling 3-2 to the Gamecocks. The two teams split the first two points with
Killian Armstrong and
Karla Sanchez George earning a three-set win on Court 5, 18-21, 21-14, 15-12. HCU's second point came from the No. 1 pair of
Kristin Gilmour and
Rachel Heilbrun in the form of a 14-21, 21-13, 15-10 three-set victory.
In the afternoon, HCU got back in the win column with a 3-2 victory over Southern Miss (12-19). Armstrong and Sanchez George won their second matchup of the day at the fives with a 21-11, 25-23 triumph before Gilmour and Heilbrun also made it a 2-0 day at Court 1, playing their way to a 21-12, 21-17 win. The deciding point came down to the No. 3 pairing of
Audrey Pearce and
Lauren Vickery who went three sets to secure the dual win, finishing 12-21, 21-16, 15-9.
The win is the first in three meetings between the Huskies and Golden Eagles.
HCU is set for its final tournament ahead of the Southland Conference Championships next weekend with a trip to Fort Worth, Texas for the Fight in the Fort hosted by TCU on Friday, Apr. 18, and Saturday, Apr. 19.
