SB: Huskies douse Demons to complete road series sweep

HCU wins fourth straight, sixth of eight to open SLC slate 3-0 for first time ever

NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana --- Houston Christian University raced out to a six-run advantage before rallying to retake the lead late to secure a conference-opening series sweep of Northwestern State on Saturday afternoon at Lady Demon Diamond. It is the first time as a member of the Southland that the Huskies have swept their first series of the season, and was the first road series sweep since taking all three at Stephen F. Austin State just over one year ago.

HCU put a large crooked number on the board in the top of the third, batting around and scoring six times. Ella Herrewig got things started with a one-out single and stole second base before coming in on a AB Garcia single through the left side. Haylie Savage doubled home Garcia for a 2-0 lead.

Maddy Bailey followed Savage with a beautifully executed bunt single and advanced to second, with Savage avoiding the tag to push the lead to three.

Keely Castillo was next in line, scalding a ball to left that pushed Bailey across the dish with the fourth run of the inning before Karlie Barba poked a single to the left side for the Huskies fifth straight hit.

After Chloe Foster walked to load the bases, Hanna York mashed a ball to the wall for a sacrifice fly and a 5-0 lead. Jaycee Foor popped a ball into shallow left that couldn't be caught, ending up with a double that scored Barba for a six-run lead as the Huskies sent 11 to the plate in the inning.

Northwestern State responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame, getting five straight hits with two outs. DJ Lynch provided a two-run single, and a double-steal by Lynch and Peyton Peck provided the third run to cut the lead in half, 6-3. Kynleigh Evans came on in relief, and after loading the bases got a come-backer to end the inning.

The Demons would even things up with in the fourth. A bases-loaded walk to Lynch pulled NSU to within two runs, and a ground-rule double over the fence in right field from Peyton Peck scored two runs to make the score 6-6.

That tie was short-lived however, as the Huskies grabbed the lead back in the top of the fifth, this time for good. Karlie Barba walked to lead off the frame and pinch-runner Jocelyn Briseno advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chloe Foster. Hanna York yanked a ball to left center with Briseno scoring easily for a 7-6 HCU lead.

HCU threatened again in the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but couldn't scratch anything across in that stanza. But in the very next at-bat, the Huskies would get their insurance run. Ella Herrewig singled with one out and moved to third on single by AB Garcia. Haylie Savage then did her job, pulling a ground-ball to the right side to push Herrewig across the plate for a two-run cushion.

In the seventh the Demons got a lead-off double, but Leah Hammack induced two pop-ups and a ground-out to shut the diamond down and finish off the Southland Conference opening series sweep.

The Huskies mashed out 13 hits on the afternoon, giving them 33 on the weekend to produce 23 runs. It is the seventh game with double-figure hits this season for the Huskies, who have now won six of their last eight to improve to 9-11 overall on the season.

AB Garcia went 3-5, her second game on the weekend with three or more base knocks and the fifth such outing in her last six games, giving her seven on the season. She also scored a run and drove in a run. Ella Herrewig recorded her first career three-hit game, going 3-4 with two runs scored and stole a base for the second straight game. Maddy Bailey went 2-4 with a run and an RBI while Savage and York drove in two runs apiece.

Hammack, the third of three Huskies in the circle on this afternoon, closed the door on the Demons with 3.1 innings of two-hit relief to earn her second win of the weekend and move to 4-3 on the season.

Peyton Peck posted a four-hit game for the hosts (3-20, 0-3), going 4-4 with two RBI. DJ Lynch was 1-2 with two walks and three RBI while Cameron Curtis and Brynn Daniel each went 1-3 with two runs scored. Kaymie Chandler was saddled with the loss, the second of a trio of Demon pitchers. She went two innings giving up four hits and two runs to fall to 0-3 on the season.

This coming Tuesday marks the finish line of the current 17-game road stretch, as the Huskies will travel to Huntsville to take on former Southland foe Sam Houston State University. First pitch from Bearkat Softball Complex is slated for 6 pm.

HCU will return home next Friday and Saturday for the first time since opening weekend as it hosts defending SLC champion Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game series at Husky Field.
