SB: HCU halted in Huntsville by Sam Houston

Four-game winning streak snapped; Huskies return home this Friday after 17 straight on road



HUNTSVILLE, Texas --- Houston Christian University saw its four-game winning streak snapped in a 4-2 defeat to Sam Houston State University on Tuesday night at Bearkat Softball Complex, the final contest of a 17-game stretch away from home.
 
Sam Houston got on the board with a single tally in the first frame. Kyla Hiene struck out to lead off the inning but reached on a wild pitch. She would steal second and then move to third on a groundout before crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly by Jenny Robison, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
 
The Bearkats would tack on two more in the third inning. Kinsey Hobbs walked to lead off the inning and one out later would come around on a double to right center by Bella Perez. Perez would come in on an RBI single by Elia Hebel.
 
HCU put up a single run in the fourth. Maddy Bailey singled to center to begin the inning and moved to second when Karlie Barba was hit by a pitch. Pinch-runner Makenzie Morris and Bailey would advance a base on a wild pitch, and then one out later Bailey scored on another wild pitch, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
 
Sam got the run back in the fifth inning. Hebel walked and pinch runner Chesnee Faile advanced to second on a sacrifice, third on a passed ball and then scored on an error, pushing the lead back to three.
 
In the seventh, the Huskies put up a single run as Chloe Foster reached on an error to start the stanza and then scored on a double by AB Garcia.
 
The Huskies managed just four hits in the game, with AB Garcia going 2-3 with a walk and an RBI. Maddy Bailey and Karlie Barba had the other hits for HCU.
 
Leah Hammack started and went three innings, giving up three hits and three runs while walking two and fanning two as her record evens at 4-4 on the campaign. Zaria Turner went three innings and allowed just two hits and an unearned run.
 
Sam Houston State, now 12-13 on the season, got four runs on five hits while taking advantage of six free passes. Kyla Heine went 2-4 with a run scored while Bella Perez was 1-3 with a double, run and RBI. Amy Abke picked up the complete game victory to improve to 4-6 on the season, allowing just the four hits and two runs while striking out 10.
 
HCU drops to 9-12 overall on the season. The Huskies will return home this Friday and Saturday for the first time since opening weekend as it hosts defending SLC champion Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game series at Husky Field.
