SB: HCU drops twin-bill to Southeastern in return home

Huskies look to salvage series with noon finale on Saturday

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University dropped a pair of games to defending Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana University on Friday, falling 6-4 and 13-4 at Husky Field. The Huskies, making their return home for the first time since the opening weekend of the season, led in both contests but couldn't hold down the high-powered SLU offense.

HCU falls to 9-14 overall and 3-2 in the league, while Southeastern runs its record to 22-7 and 5-0. The two teams will finish off the three-game series with a noon finale on Saturday

GAME 1

SLU got on the board with two quick runs in their first at-bat, taking advantage of an error before an RBI single by Maria Detillier for a 2-0 lead. HCU got one back in their first swings, as Hanna York drove in Haylie Savage with a sacrifice fly.

The Huskies would then take the lead in the second, as Karlie Barba scored from second after a bunt single by AB Garcia with a muffed throw allowing the run to score. Savage then followed with a two run double down the right-field line to plate Chloe Foster and Garcia for a 4-2 lead.

SLU got all those back and then some in the fifth, Kailey Dixon and Chloe Magee reached on singles. With two outs, it was Detillier again, driving a blast to deep center field for a three-run homer and a 5-4 Lions lead. SLU would get an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Brilee Ford.

Savage went 2-3 with a run and two RBI and Maddy Bailey had two hits as well for HCU. Cara Pitman suffered the loss, allowing seven hits and six runs, five earned while striking out three in falling to 3-2 on the season.

Hailie Burns picked up the win with five innings of shutout relief, allowing just three hits to move to 7-2. Detillier was 3-4 with the homer and four RBI, while Magee and Dixon each added two hits.

GAME 2

In game two, it was SLU in the first frame again, pushing across a single run on a double-steal by Brilee Ford with Chloe Magee scoring for a 1-0 lead. HCU would push across three runs in the bottom of the inning, getting a two-run double from Maddy Bailey  and a sacrifice fly from Karlie Barba to grab a 3-1 lead after one.

SLU put up their own three-spot in the third, getting an RBI single from Ford and a two run double by Cydnee Schneider to retake the lead 4-3. In the fourth, the floodgates opened, as the Lions put up a touchdown, with Magee and Maddie Watson getting RBI singles and Detillier popping a two-run double to put the defending champs up 11-3.

HCU got a single run in the fourth when Barba was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but SLU put up two in the fifth on another RBI double by Detillier and a sacrifice fly from Schneider that would put things to bed two innings early.

Maddy Bailey and Karlie Barba each had a hit and two RBI for HCU. Kynleigh Evans took the loss, going the first three innings before re-entering in the fourth, giving up six runs and seven hits in falling to 2-5 on the year.

Detillier was 2-2 with three runs and three RBI for an 11-hit attack by the Lions. Chloe Magee also added three hits and three runs in support of Burns, who came on in relief for a second straight game to earn a victory. She went 3.1 innings giving up one run with five K's to improve to 8-2.
