SB: Huskies thwart late Southeastern rally to salvage series finale

Pitman goes distance to hand defending champs first conference defeat

HOUSTON --- A diving grab in left field by Maddy Bailey thwarted a bases-loaded seventh-inning rally and put the finishing touches on a 6-3 win by Houston Christian University over Southeastern Louisiana University on a windy day at Husky Field on Saturday afternoon.

The victory allowed the Huskies to pick up their first home win of the season, salvage the final game of the three-game series and hand the Lions their first conference loss.

For the first time in the series, the Huskies kept the Southeastern offense off the scoreboard in the first inning. With a runner on third and one out, Cara Pitman struck out two straight to end the frame.

HCU then grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the inning, as Maddy Bailey singled with two outs and Karlie Barba then launched a two-run homer to left center field, her first of the campaign.

SLU would get one of those runs back in the top of the second as back-to-back doubles by Cydnee Schneider and Maddie Watson, each down the right field line, produced a tally, pulling the Lions to within one. The visitors would knot things up in the third, getting two doubles again, this time from Chloe Magee leading off and then one out later from Brilee Ford, whose shot to left-center tied the game.

The Huskies retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth, as three of the first four hitters reached on singles to right field. Ella Herrewig then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Chloe Foster to give HCU a 3-2 advantage.

Once more, the lead was short-lived as the defending conference champs got a solo home run to left field off the bat of Maria Detillier, her second of the weekend, to tie the game at three apiece.

In the fifth inning the Huskies retook the lead, this time for good. Maddy Bailey coaxed a one-out walk and advanced to second on a single to center by Karlie Barba. Chloe Foster then doubled to the gap in left center to score Bailey, and Hanna York followed with a chopper through the left side to score Barba and give HCU a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the Lions put the lead runner on in Schneider, who singled through the right side. She was quickly erased however, as Cara Pitman snared a little flare by Maddie Watson and threw to first to double off Schneider.

HCU would push one more insurance run across in the bottom of the sixth. Ella Herrewig singled and stole second base, and AB Garcia followed with a free pass. Haylie Savage moved the runners along with a groundout to first and Maddy Bailey pushed a sacrificed fly to right field to score Herrewig for a 6-3 lead.

In the top of the seventh, the potent SLU offense reared its head in a last-ditch attempt to rally. Kailey Dixon and Shenita Tucker lined singles to start the frame, and after a fly out, Chloe Magee reached on a fielder's choicethat forced Tucker at second for the second out. Detillier walked to load the bases before Maddy Bailey made the play of the game with a beautiful diving grab of a sinking liner by Brilee Ford, ending the threat and the ballgame.

The Huskies put 10 hits in the books, led by Karlie Barba, who went 2-4 with the homer, two runs and two RBI. Chloe Foster went 2-3 with a run and RBI. Bailey, Herrewig and York each had a hit and a run driven in as well to help snap SLU's six-game winning streak.

Cara Pitman went the distance, hurling 114 pitches and scattering 10 hits and three runs. She walked only one and fanned four to run her record to 4-2 and hand the the Lions their first conference defeat of the campaign.

Kailey Dixon and Cyndee Schneider each had two hits for the Lions as part of a 10-hit offense. Detillier capped off a strong weekend going 1-3 with a homer for Southeastern, which falls to 22-8 overall and 5-1 in the Southland.

Hallie Burns suffered the loss, going 2.2 innings of relief and giving up four hits, three runs and two walk with one strikeout. She falls to 8-3 on the season, earning the decision in each of the three games in the series.

HCU improves to 10-14 overall and 4-2 in the Southland. The Huskies will head north on Tuesday to take on UT-Arlington at 6 pm before returning to SLC play next weekend at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
