SB: HCU toppled in midweek contest at UTA

Huskies return to Southland action at rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this weekend

ARLINGTON, Texas --- Houston Christian University dropped a midweek road contest to University of Texas-Arlington, falling 10-2 on Tuesday night at Allen Saxe Field. The Mavericks put up five runs in the first inning and never looked back in handing the Huskies a defeat that kicked off a stretch of seven games out of eight away from home.

Mia McNulty singled through the left side three batters into the home first, scoring Kailee Bautista with UTA's first run. A bases loaded walk to Elizabeth Baylor scored another and later Talia Maldonado would push the lead to 4-0 with a two-run double. She would later score on a passed ball to finish off the crooked-number frame.

An RBI double by Dee McClarity scored McNulty to push the lead to 6-0 before the Huskies got on the board in the top of the fifth. AB Garcia singled and stole second base prior to a opposite field dinger for Haylie Savage, her second of the season that cut the lead to 6-2.

A three-run homer by Marley Neises in the home half of the same frame got the runs back for UTA, and the game ended on an unearned run in the sixth.

AB Garcia had two of HCU's six hits, a run scored and a stolen base.  Haylie Savage drove in the two runs to push her team-high total to 27 while Hanna York added a hit and two walks.

Kynleigh Evans took the loss, falling to 2-6 on the season. Leah Hammack went 5.2 innings, scattering eight hits and five runs while fanning four.

Talia Maldonado went 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored and Emma Lopez added two hits. Jessica Adams picked up the victory for UTA in relief, going four innings to move to 5-2 on the season for the Mavericks, now 16-10 overall.

HCU falls to 10-15 on the season. The Huskies will now return to conference action this weekend, heading south down the coast to take on rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The three-game series at Chapman Field begins with a Friday doubleheader and closes with a single game on Saturday, with noon start times scheduled for both days.
