Huskies settle for split of twin-bill to open series at TAMUCC

Pitman two-hitter in opener; rubber game set for noon Saturday

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas --- Houston Christian University split a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Chapman Field with rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, with each team posting a shutout victory. The Huskies got a brilliant two-hitter from Cara Pitman in the opener, but the Islanders returned the favor with a 7-0 win in game two to send the series to a rubber game on Saturday.

HCU is now 11-16 and 5-3 in Southland play heading into the noon series finale. TAMUCC is 7-20 overall and 2-6 in SLC play.

GAME 1

HCU put three runs on the board in the very first frame and Cara Pitman made them hold up, as the Huskies took a 3-0 decision in the opener of the series.

Haylie Savage singled with one out and moved to second on single by Maddy Bailey. Karlie Barba then bounced a ball up the middle that hit the second base bag to drive in Savage with the game's first run.

Keely Castillo then added a two-out, two-run double, scoring Bailey and Barba, pushing the HCU lead to 3-0 just one half inning into the contest.

Pitman was backed up by some splendid glovework throughout. A nifty 5-4-3 double-play ended the second inning, and in the sixth Ella Herrewig made a beautiful diving stop and glove flip for the second out of the inning. Pitman then ended the contest with an all-out hustle play, fielding a slow dribbler and after losing her footing, crawling to tag the bag just in time to beat the runner.

The Huskies cranked out 13 hits in the game, led by AB Garcia who posted her eighth three-hit outing of the campaign. Castillo had two hits and two RBI while Chloe Foster and Hanna York also added two hits each.

Pitman went the distance, allowing just the two singles and a lone free pass while striking out four for her team-leading fifth victory of the season.

Holly Ayala took the loss for TAMUCC.

GAME 2

The tables turned in the second game, as the Huskies couldn't get any offense going and committed four costly miscues that led to four runs in the second inning.

Leah Hammack worked out of a bases loaded jam in the first with nothing crossing the plate, but the second inning wasn't as kind. Paolina Baez had the big knock in the frame, a two-run double to the gap in right center, and she would later score on an error to make it 4-0 after two in favor of the hosts.

The Islanders got three more in the third to back Malia Williams, who went the distance and gave up just four hits and one walk while fanning five to move to 4-6 on the season.

Garcia, Bailey, Barba and York had the lone hits for HCU. Hammack went 4.1 innings total and allowed just three hits and one earned run in falling to 4-5 overall.
