SB: HCU drops series finale at TAMUCC

Huskies return home on Tuesday against cross-town foe Texas Southern

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas --- Houston Christian University dropped the series finale to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi on Saturday, falling 5-3 at Chapman Field, as the Islanders took the three-game Southland Conference set two games to one.

The Islanders jumped in front early, getting two runs in the first. Three walks sandwiched a couple of fielder's choice plays before Dafne Mercado put Corpus up with a two-out single to right field to push a pair of runners across the plate.

HCU got one back in the top of the second. A walk to Keely Castillo and single by Heidi Maytum brought up Ella Herrewig, who promptly deposited a two-out single to left center to plate Castillo and cut the lead in half.

TAMUCC would get that run back quickly in the bottom of the frame. The Islanders put runners on the corners before a hard comebacker by Erynne Castillo glanced off the pitchers glove for an RBI infield hit. A Mimi Thornton sacrifice fly brought in another run to give the hosts a 4-1 lead through two innings.

In the fifth, the Huskies got two runners on with back-to-back singles by Heidi Maytum and Ella Herrewig. Maddy Bailey then brought them around when she lined a triple down the first base line, cutting the lead to 4-3.

The Huskies would load the bases with two outs in the sixth, but couldn't scratch across anything. The Islanders then put an insurance run on the board on a seeing-eye single through the right side by Paolina Baez to make the score 5-3.

Ella Herrewig went 2-3 with an RBI and Heidi Maytum added two hits as well. Maddy Bailey had two RBI for the Huskies.

Kynleigh Evans suffered the loss for HCU, falling to 2-7 on the season. Cara Pitman went five innings of relief, scattering seven his and two runs while fanning three.

Paolina Baez went 2-3 with an RBI and Karisa Lopez was 2-3 with two runs scored for the Islanders, now 9-20 overall and 3-6 in SLC play. Kendra Winfrey went 3.2 innings of relief for her fourth victory of the campaign, while Zoe Hardy picked up her first save with 1.2 innings of one-hit relief.

HCU is now 11-17 overall and 5-4 in the Southland. The Huskies will return home on Tuesday for a single game with cross-town foe Texas Southern University. First pitch at Husky Field is scheduled for 5 pm.
