SB: Bailey, HCU walk off cross-town foe TSU at Husky Field

Hammack goes the distance for fifth victory; Huskies back to SLC play this weekend at SFA

HOUSTON --- Maddy Bailey smashed the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the seventh for a double to right center, driving in Haylie Savage with the game-winning run as Houston Christian University walked off Texas Southern University 3-2 at Husky Field on Tuesday afternoon.

A 2-0 lead was put on the board by HCU with single runs in the third and fourth frames. In the third, Ella Herrewig led off with a bunt single, moved to second on groundout, then took advantage of two consecutive wild pitches to score the first tally of the contest. In the fourth Keely Castillo laced a two-out triple to the gap in left center and then scored when Hanna York singled up the middle, giving the Huskies a two-run lead.

The Tigers would tie things up in the fifth. TSU would get a leadoff walk from Amerie Martin, who then moved to second on a single and to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Karisma Garcia that cut the lead in half. After a walk to Destiny Menchaca, Lanay Carr singled to center to score Kylie Wilson to make it two-all.

HCU wasted no time in the bottom of the seventh, needing just seven pitches to bring the game to its conclusion. Haylie Savage worked a one-out walk, and Bailey ambushed the first pitch she saw for a double to right center that chased Savage around the bases for the game-winning score.

Castillo and Jaycee Foor each went 2-3 to lead an eight-hit offense for HCU. Bailey was 1-4 with the game-winning RBI while Hanna York went 1-2 with a walk and RBI.

Leah Hammack went the distance, scattering eight hits and allowing just the two runs in the fourth while walking three and fanning two. She upped her record to 5-5 on the season, tying fellow frosh Cara Pitman for team-high victory honors.

Melonie Guardiola took the loss in relief for TSU as she went 2.1 innings and allowed three hits, one the game-winner by Bailey in the seventh. Kylie Wilson, Marisa Perla and Marissa Martinez each recorded two hits for the Tigers, who fall to 7-13 overall on the season.

HCU improves to 12-17 on the season. The Huskies will return to Southland Conference action this weekend when they head to Nacogdoches for a three-game set with Stephen F. Austin State University. The series will begin with a single game on Friday at 5:30 pm, followed by a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
