SB: HCU drops series opener at Stephen F. Austin

Huskies never get going offensively; series concludes with Sunday doubleheader

NACOGDOCHES, Texas --- Houston Christian University dropped the opener of a three-game series in the Piney Woods on Saturday night, falling 8-0 to Stephen F. Austin State University at SFA Softball Field on Saturday night. HCU never got anything going offensively and a three-run third by the host Jacks put the game out of reach.

The Lumberjacks took the early lead in their first time at the plate. Ellie Vance reached on an error with two outs in the inning and Kyi'Marri Ester then doubled to left center to put the Jacks on the board.

Two more would come across in the third. The first was again courtesy of Ester, who doubled down the right field line with one out to bring in Hope Lusk, who had been hit by a pitch to begin the frame. Ester then scored on a sacrifice fly by Adelyn Becerra, giving the hosts a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, SFA piled on three more. Jaime Varga tripled to lead off the inning and one out later, Mikaelah Burkland launched a two-run homer. After a single by Lusk, Vance tripled to center field to push the lead out to six.

The Huskies mounted a rally in the fifth, loading the bases with no outs, but a lineout double-play and a strikeout cut it short before any runs could score, leaving the 6-0 on the board.

SFA would then end things in the sixth, getting an RBI double by Lusk and a RBI single from Vance.

Houston Christian managed just five hits in the contest while SFA cranked out 11. AB Garcia, Keely Castillo and Ella Herrewig each went 1-2 for HCU. Ester and Vance each had two hits and two RBI while Lusk added two hits and Burkland had the two-run homer.

Cara Pitman takes the loss to fall to 5-3 on the season, going 3.1 innings and allowing four earned runs and six hits. Alexis Telford was the winner for SFA, going six innings for the shutout while scattering the five hits and fanning four.

HCU is now 12-18 overall while SFA improves to 15-18. The two teams, now tied at 5-5 in conference play, will finish off the series with an 11 am doubleheader on Sunday.
