SB: Huskies salvage Sunday split at Stephen F. Austin

Nine conference games in nine-day stretch starts next Friday vs. rival UIW

NACOGDOCHES, Texas --- Houston Christian University salvaged the series finale with a 4-2 win in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader with Stephen F. Austin State University at SFA Softball Field. The Jacks won the opener 9-1 before Cara Pitman's masterful complete game in the second game.

The Huskies are now 13-19 overall while SFA is 15-19. The two teams now sit in a four-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings at 6-6 on the campaign.

HCU now embarks on a rugged stretch that sees it play nine Southland games in a nine-day span. The Huskies will be at home for six of those games on consecutive weekends against rival University of the Incarnate Word and McNeese State University, with a mid-week trip to Nicholls State University sandwiched in between.

UIW sits one game ahead of HCU in third place at 7-5, while McNeese is in second place in the league at 9-3. Nicholls joins HCU, SFA and Lamar in the quartet of teams at 6-6.

GAME 1

After a scoreless opening frame, SFA put up a five-spot in the bottom of the second to grab control. A leadoff single by Lilly Bean was followed by a two-run homer to left center from Adelyn Becerra. The Jacks tacked on another pair of runs on an RBI single by Mikaelah Burkland and a sacrifice fly from Hope Lusk, pushing the lead to 4-0.

Ellie Vance then reached on an error, allowing Burkland to score and the hosts found themselves up 5-0. Two more crossed for the Jacks in the third on an RBI double from Becerra and an RBI single by Burkland.

The Huskies got on the board in the top of the fourth. Haylie Savage led off with a double off the wall in left center and she came home on an RBI single by Karlie Barba. SFA got the run right back in the bottom the inning when Becerra homered for the second time in the ballgame.

Savage went 2-2 with a run scored for HCU, which managed just four hits in the game. Karlie Barba went 1-2 with the lone RBI for the Huskies, while Ella Herrewig also went 1-2. Leah Hammack, the first of four HCU hurlers in the contest, was stuck with the loss, dropping to 5-6 on the season after giving up five hits and five runs.

Reagan Hall picked up the victory for SFA, going six innings and allowing the four hits and one run to improve to 4-5 on the campaign. Becerra led the 13-hit offense, going 3-3 with two homers and four RBI.

GAME 2

HCU finally managed to break through first, sending two across the pay station in the second innings. Chloe Foster singled with one out and Hanna York followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Keely Castillo followed with a single to center field to score Foster and a 1-0 lead. Heidi Maytum then laid down a perfect squeeze that turned into an RBI single, the fourth straight hit for HCU to push the lead to two.

The Jacks cut the lead in half in the sixth on an RBI double by Ester, but the Huskies got that run back and another in the top of the seventh, both coming with two outs. Heidi Maytum doubled into the left field corner and came home on a looping single by Ella Herrewig to make the score 3-1.

AB Garcia then hit the very next pitch over the heads of the outfield for a triple to score Herrewig and give HCU a three-run cushion heading to the bottom of the seventh.

SFA would get a solo homer from Becerra to lead off the hosts half of the inning, her third of the doubleheader to pull the Jacks to within two, 4-2. The Jacks would get another runner on base and bring the tying run to the plate, but Cara Pitman got Mikaelah Burkland to pop up and end the ballgame.

Hanna York and Heidi Maytum each had two hits. Maytum, Castillo, Herrewig and Garcia each drove in a run in support of Cara Pitman, who won her team-high sixth game of the season. Pitman went the distance on 97 pitches, scattering six hits and two runs with no walks.

Brooke Gainous took the loss for SFA, giving up nine hits and four runs in 6.2 innings. Becerra hit her third homer of the twin-bill while Ester went 1-2 with an RBI as well.
