SB: HCU drops both ends of home twin-bill to rival UIW

Heartbreak in 10-innings in nightcap; Huskies will look to salvage series at noon Friday

HOUSTON --- A heartbreaking 10-inning loss in game two capped a tough return home to Husky Field as Houston Christian University was swept in a Southland Conference doubleheader by rival University of the Incarnate Word on Thursday evening. HCU fell 7-0 in the opener before a 5-3 defeat in game two.

The Huskies fall to 13-21 overall on the season and are now 6-8 in SLC play. UIW improved to 19-14 and 9-5 in conference action.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Friday. First pitch is slated for 12 pm.

GAME 1

The Huskies struggled from the start in the opener, as the Cardinals put up a five-spot in the first frame and never looked back. The visitors took advantage of three free passes to load the bases, but HCU got two quick outs on a strikeout and sacrifice fly, and looked poised to get out of the inning with no further damage.

Madison Dorrow then hit an RBI single and Ayla Gonzales reached on a fielders choice that allowed a run to score. Ryleigh Mata provided the big blow of the inning, a two-run single up the middle that made the score 5-0 before the Huskies had come to the dish.

HCU managed just three hits in the ballgame, two coming off the bat of Hanna York. Kynleigh Evans pitched admirably in relief, going 6.1 innings and allowing just four hits and one unearned run. Cara Pitman was stuck with the defeat, dropping to 6-4 on the season.

GAME 2

Things got off to a rocky start in game two, as reigning 2024 SLC Player of the Year Victoria Altamirano led off the contest with a home run to centerfield. The Huskies would come right back in the bottom of the frame, tying the game on a bunt single by Hanna York that scored AB Garcia.

Karlie Barba then stepped to the plate and laced a single back up the box, scoring Haylie Savage and York, giving HCU a 3-1 lead.

Leah Hammack then set down nine of the next ten before UIW would even things up in the fifth. A single and stolen base by Ayla Gonzales starting things, and she would score on an RBI single by Mata down the left field line, advancing to third on a throwing error. Mata would then scored on bunt single by Baylee Lemons, making it 3-3.

That's the way it would stay until the 10th inning. HCU would load the bases in the seventh and put two on in the ninth but could not push home a run in either instance.

In the tenth, Lemons walked and Altamirano doubled to right field, but Lemons was cut down at home on a fantastic relay from Ella Herrewig to Keely Castillo to Jayce Foor. After Dominque Guerra singled up the middle, Altamirano was picked off third base, and it looked again like the Huskies might escape once more. But Erin Perez doubled to the gap in left center to score Guerra and Perez then scored on single by Bryanna Fuentes, giving UIW a 5-3 advantage.

Hammack was gutsy, going 10 innings and scattering 10 hits and four earned runs on 128 pitches in falling to 5-7 on the season. Hanna York had two hits for the second straight game and drove in a run, and Maddy Bailey had two hits as well. Barba went 1-3 with two walks and two RBI.

Samantha Portillo went nine innings in relief for UIW to earn to improve to 6-5 on the year, allowing five hits and no runs while fanning five. Altamirano went 2-3 with her 12th homer of the season, while Perez and Mata each had two knocks and a ribby.
