BSB: Huskies Sweep SFA in SLC Series Finale

Late-Inning Surge Seals HCU’s Southland Series Win

HOUSTON, Texas – The baseball team completed a series sweep over Stephen F. Austin with a 6-4 victory on Sunday at Husky Field, capping off a dominant weekend in Southland Conference play.

Jack Walker jump-started the Huskies' offense with a two-run double in the sixth, followed by Rhett Hendricks' RBI double to tie the game. Parker Edwards then delivered a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth, and Tevis Payne added a sacrifice fly for insurance.

On the mound, Ben Smith pitched seven strong innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out six. Jacob Cyr earned the win with a scoreless eighth, and Ben Norton secured his fourth save of the season.

Kenneth Dutka led HCU with three hits, while Walker and Edwards each contributed two hits and two RBIs. The Huskies' defense also turned two key double plays to keep SFA in check.

The game opened with a scoreless first inning as both teams' defenses held firm. SFA threatened in the second with a single from Henning, but a double play erased the runner, keeping the game knotted at 0-0. HCU put a runner on with a walk, but Hendricks was caught stealing to end the inning.

The Lumberjacks struck first in the third after a throwing error allowed a baserunner. Schne then delivered a clutch two-run single down the left-field line, putting SFA ahead 2-0. HCU responded with two hits in the bottom half but failed to capitalize, leaving the deficit intact.

SFA extended its lead in the fourth when Henning led off with a double and later scored on a single by Turgeo, making it 3-0. The Huskies managed a single in the bottom half but failed to advance the runner past first base.

The Huskies' bats came alive in the sixth. After a leadoff walk and a single, Walker laced a two-run double to bring HCU within one. Hendricks followed with another double to right-center, tying the game at 3-3.

SFA reclaimed the lead in the seventh with a solo home run from Turgeo. HCU got a runner to second in the bottom half but couldn't bring him home, keeping the score at 4-3.

The Lumberjacks threatened again in the eighth, putting two runners on with a double and an intentional walk, but they failed to capitalize. The Huskies took advantage in the bottom half, plating three runs off an Edwards double, a sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice fly to seize a 6-4 lead.

In the ninth, SFA looked for a late comeback, but HCU's pitching locked down the win, retiring the side in order.

Next up, the Huskies travel to Waco to face Baylor on Tuesday, April 1, at 6:30 p.m.
