BSB: HCU Falls in Series Finale at Rice

Huskies Split Four-Game Series Against Owls

HOUSTON, Texas – HCU wrapped up its final non-conference series of the season against Rice on Sunday at Reckling Park, falling to the host Owls by a 6-2 final.

The Huskies (12-6) opened the weekend with a thrilling 4-3 victory in 11 innings on Friday night before adding a 6-2 win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Husky Field. However, Rice (4-16) bounced back to take the final two games, winning 7-4 on Saturday evening before closing out the series with Sunday's victory.

HCU opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Tevis Payne reached on an error and came around to score two batters later on a sacrifice fly from Parker Edwards. The Owls answered in the bottom half with Hiram Bocachica reaching base thanks to a leadoff walk before advancing on a wild pitch and then scoring on a groundout to tie the game at 1-1.

In the top of the second, Matthew Leiterman led off with a double and a pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs but a strikeout ended the threat with three runners on base. Rice took the lead in the fourth after a solo home run from Trey Duffield. The Owls pushed across another run in the fifth for a 3-1 advantage.

It remained a two-run game until the bottom of the eighth when Rice added a pair of home runs for three runs to up its lead to 6-1. With one out in the ninth, Leiterman reached on an infield single followed by a pinch hit, ground-rule double off the bat of Luke Bard, putting two runners in scoring position. Rhett Hendricks brought Leiterman home for the Huskies' second run with a fielder's choice but the game ended on a flyout by the next batter.

Leiterman and Jack Walker each recorded two hits. On the mound, Ben Smith started and was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs with two earned. He threw 4.1 innings with five hits allowed, two strikeouts and three walks.

Up next, The Huskies return to Southland Conference play with a three-game road series at UT Rio Grande Valley. First pitch of gme one is set for Friday, March 21, at 6:30 p.m. in Edinburg, Texas.
