SB: HCU earns split of games for second straight day

Huskies close Mardi Gras Mambo on Sunday with a 10 am tilt vs. West Georgia

YOUNGSVILLE, Louisiana --- Houston Christian University earned a split of its games for the second straight day at the Mardi Gras Mambo on Twins Field at Youngsville Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon. HCU defeated University of Maine 9-7 before falling to Iowa State University 10-2 in six innings.

The Huskies are now 5-11 overall on the season and 2-2 on the weekend. HCU will take on University of West Georgia on Sunday morning at 10 am in their finale.

DAY 2 - GAME 1 vs. MAINE

Both teams put up a three-spot in the first inning but a six-run frame by the Huskies in the fourth proved to be the difference.

HCU got and RBI single by Keely Castillo, and then an RBI groundout from Chloe Foster and an RBI fielder's choice from Hanna York to grab an early three-run advantage. The Black Bears came right back in the bottom of the frame, as the first five batters reached base with three crossing the plate, the final two on a walk and sacrifice fly to knot things up with the two teams combining for six runs after one inning of play.

In the fourth, the Huskies blew things open. Jaycee Foor scored on a wild pitch and an RBI double by AB Garcia scored Ella Herrewig. Garcia and Haylie Savage then scored on a wild pitch before a sacrifice fly from Foster. Karlie Barba then capped the inning off with a double to the gap in right center to plate Castillo and give HCU a 9-3 cushion.

They would need it, as Maine got four in the bottom of the sixth to make things interesting. A bases-loaded hit by pitch drove in the first run before the big blow off the bat of Gabby Papushka, a triple to right that unloaded the bases and cut the deficit to two, 9-7.

AB Garcia led HCU's dozen-hit attack, going 3-5 with a double, RBI, run and stolen base. It was her third three-hit game of the season and ninth game of her career with three or more hits. Chloe Foster went 2-3 with two RBI while Maddy Bailey went 2-4 with two runs scored. Keely Castillo was 1-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Leah Hammack went seven innings in relief to pick up the win and move to 2-3 on the season. She gave up just five hits and four runs while striking out six.

Immy Gie and Francesca Guerrera each had two hits for Maine, while Papushka had the triple and three runs driven in. Starting pitcher Madison Simmerman suffered the loss, lasting three innings and giving up nine hits and six runs to drop to 1-3 on the season for the Black Bears, now 1-10 on the season.

DAY 2 - GAME 2 vs. IOWA STATE:

In game two, HCU saw Iowa State explode for eight runs in the sixth-inning to break open a deadlocked ballgame.

The Huskies jumped on the board first in the first, getting an RBI single to right by Keely Castillo that scored AB Garcia.

In the bottom of the fourth the Cyclones tied things up as Sydney Malott scored on a wild pitch. HCU got that run back immediately in the top of the fifth, with Garcia coming home again, this time on an RBI single to right by Maddy Bailey.

Things got deadlocked again in the bottom of the frame, as Jessie Clemons drew a bases-loaded free pass to push home pinch-runner Ireland Buss.

In the bottom of the sixth, ISU got a two-run dinger from Paige Zender to grab the lead, 4-2, then poured on six more runs on a two-run double by Clemons, a two-run homer from Reagan Bartholomew and a solo homer from Tatum Johnson that ended the ball-game.

AB Garcia posted her second three-hit game of the day, and fourth of the season. She now has 10 games in her career with three or more base knocks in a game. Maddy Bailey was 2-3, her third straight two-hit contest of the weekend. Kynleigh Evans took the loss, going five innings and allowing five hits and four runs with four strikeouts to fall to 1-4 on the year.

Iowa State was led by Johnson, who went 2-4 while seven other Cyclones recorded a hit. Clemons had three RBI and the late rally made a winner of Lauren Schurman (4-5), ISU's third pitcher of the day. The Cyclones, who dropped two games on Friday, came back with two wins on Saturday to improve to 8-9 on the season.
