SB: Huskies cap Mardi Gras Mambo with run-rule win over West Georgia

Pitman picks up third win of season, Garcia posts third straight three-hit game

YOUNGSVILLE, Louisiana --- Houston Christian University capped a solid weekend in Louisiana Sunday morning with a 10-2 run-rule victory over University of West Georgia on Twins Field at Youngsville Softball Complex. The win gave the Huskies three wins in five games over the three days.

The Huskies wasted little time getting out on the front foot. Consecutive doubles from AB Garcia and Haylie Savage began the first, putting HCU up 1-0 just five pitches into the ballgame.

HCU starter Cara Pitman worked out of two-on with one out scenarios in both the second and the third to preserve the lead before the Huskies struck again. Two more would come across in the bottom half of inning three as Maddy Bailey and Keely Castillo provided sacrifice flies to score Ella Herrewig and AB Garcia respectively, giving the home team at 3-0 cushion.

Not done, HCU put up another crooked number in the fourth, pushing four across the pay station. Chloe Foster led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Karlie Barba. The two would then steal second and third before Jaycee Foor walked to load the bases. Herrewig then singled through the left side to score Foster for a 4-0 lead.

AB Garcia reached on a fielder's choice forcing Barba at home, but Savage followed with a walk to plate Foor. Maddy Bailey then delivered the final blow, a double to right field that scored Herrewig and Garcia to a 7-0 lead.

West Georgia avoided a shutout in the fifth, getting an RBI double from Sky Ramos and a sacrifice fly from Madison Vandergriff to cut the lead to 7-2.

The Huskies then finished things off in their half of the inning. Chloe Foster reached on a fielder's choice and went to second on a Hanna York base knock. Barba then walked to load the bases and was pinch-run for by Madison Dominguez. Foor cracked a single to right field to drive in Foster, keeping the bases loaded for Herrewig, who earned a free pass to bring in York. Garcia then struck a single through the right side to bring home Dominguez with the game-ender.

AB Garcia finished off a terrific three days by posting her third straight three-hit game of the weekend. She went 3-4 with three runs scored, giving her four three-hit games in her last six outings for five total on the season.

Maddy Bailey was one of six other Huskies to collect a hit and had three RBI, finishing off a seven-hit weekend in her return to the lineup. Ella Herrewig went 1-1 with two walks, two RBI and two runs scored while Savage drove in two as well.

Cara Pitman picked up her second win in three days, going five innings while scattering seven hits and two runs. She walked three and struck out a pair with seven fly-outs and six groundouts, moving to 3-1 on the season.

Makayla Register went 2-3, and Sky Ramos and Madison Vandergriff each collected an RBI for the Wolves, who fall to 6-8 on the season. Calli Hardison, the first of three West Georgia hurlers, took the loss, going three innings and allowing three hits and three runs in falling to 1-5 overall.

HCU improves to 6-11 as it heads into the first Southland Conference series of the season at Northwestern State. A doubleheader on Friday at 4 and 6 pm will be followed by a noon finale on Saturday.
