SB: HCU Falls in a Pair of One-Run Decisions

Haylie Savage drives in three runs on the day

HOUSTON – HCU suffered a pair of one-run defeats on day two of the Houston Classic on Saturday at Husky Field, falling to New Mexico, 3-2, and ULM, 6-5.

Game 1

Both teams went three-and-out in the first inning but in the top of the second, New Mexico (3-2) got a leadoff walk followed by a single and a stolen base to put two runners in scoring position with nobody out. HCU (0-4) pitcher Addy Prasifka struck out the next two, however, before loading the bases on a hit batter. She then induced a pop-up to short to end the threat and strand three on base.

The Lobos got on the board in the third with a pair of unearned runs after Miracle McKenzie singled up the middle with the bases loaded. The Huskies answered in the bottom half of the inning, however, with Chloe Foster leading things off with an infield single. She then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jaycee Foor. AB Garcia reached on an infield single, moving Foster over to third, and Haylie Savage drove a double to right center to plate both HCU runners and even the score at 2-2.

New Mexico's Sydney Carithers opened the top of the fourth by reaching on an error and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. She then moved up on a ground out and scored on a passed ball to regain the lead for the Lobos. The Huskies put runners on base in the fourth and the seventh but were unable to advance them past first.

Prasifka threw all seven innings for the Huskies with three runs allowed, none of them earned, on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2

A leadoff walk to Maddie Nicholls in the top of the second hurt the Huskies as Nicholls moved up to third after a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. Following a two-out walk, Marissa Zenzen plated Nicholls with an infield single to give ULM (1-2) a 1-0 lead.

Brooklin Lippert led off the third with a bunt single for the Warhawks and then quickly stole second. She advanced to third on a ground ball to second before scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Meagan Brown, extending the ULM lead to 2-0.

In the bottom of the third, a two-out rally got HCU on the board with Garcia reaching on a throwing error before scoring on a Savage double to left center. Maddy Bailey followed that up with a well-hit single through the left side to bring Savage around to score and knot things up at 2-2.

In the top of the fourth, Lippert again reached with a leadoff bunt single followed by a single to left by Ellie Carter. The two baserunners then moved up with stolen bases. Following a strikeout, Lippert scored on a wild pitch to put ULM back in the lead. Maddie Nicholls than lofted a single to left center to bring Carter home and make it a 4-2 ballgame.

The Huskies again had an answer, however, in the bottom of the fifth. HCU loaded the bases with one out, forcing a pitching change by the Warhawks. Bailey hit into a fielder's choice with a throw home getting the lead runner with a force out. With two down, pinch hitter Hanna York came up with a clutch line drive single to center to score Garcia and Savage and tie the game at 4-4.

Keely Castillo led off the fifth inning with a triple to right field and then scored on a Chloe Foster single to right. In the top of the seventh, Carter sent a one-out double over the head of Jocelyn Briseno followed by a single to left center by Meagan Brown who advanced to second on the throw in that nearly caught Carter off third but a tag attempt by Savage came loose from her glove, leaving runners on second and third. Nicholls singled up the middle to plate one and tie the score. The next batter, Morgan Brown, singled to left to bring home another run and give ULM the 6-5 advantage.

Savage finished the day 2-for-6 at the plate with a pair of doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Garcia scored three times for the Huskies.

HCU makes the trip to Stephenville, Texas next weekend for the Whataburger Invitational hosted by Tarleton State, facing the Texas twice while also playing games against Akron, Austin Peay and South Dakota State from Thursday through Saturday.
