SB: HCU picks up first win, splits pair at Whataburger Invitational

Hammack tosses gem in opener, Huskies fall to host Texans in game two

STEPHENVILLE, Texas--- Houston Christian University picked up its first victory of the season as part of a split of games on the first day of the Whataburger Invitational at Tarleton Softball Complex on Friday. The Huskies rallied for two runs in the seventh inning to nip Akron 3-2 in the first game before falling to host Tarleton State 10-2 in game two.

HCU will play twice more on Saturday, with game times being adjusted and moved up 30 minutes due to weather concerns. The Huskies will now take on South Dakota State University at 9:00 am followed by an 11:15 am matchup with Austin Peay State University. It is the first-ever meeting with each for the Huskies.

GAME 1 vs. AKRON:

Leah Hammack pitched a complete-game gem and the Huskies rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to capture their first victory of the campaign.

Heading into their final at-bat, the Huskies had put up six hits but stranded six. In the seventh, Heidi Maytum singled to right center with one down. After Madison Dominguez popped up to third, AB Garcia singled to left to put runners on first and second.

Jocelyn Briseno came on to run for Maytum, and Haylie Savage cracked the first pitch she saw up the middle to score the tying run and move Garcia to third. Hanna York wasted no time either, lacing the first pitch she saw past diving Akron third baseman Alexis Campbell to score Garcia and give HCU the lead.

Hammack was masterful, allowing just four hits and a third-inning run coming on a fielder's choice. She walked one and struck out one in picking up her first collegiate win.

Savage went 3-4 with an RBI, while York was 1-3 with the game-winning RBI. Garcia and Ella Herrewig each had two knocks in a 10-hit day for the Huskies.

GAME 2 at TARLETON STATE:

HCU took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Hanna York. After the Texans tied things in the bottom half, the Huskies grabbed the lead back when Madison Dominguez reached on an error that allowed Keely Castillo to score for a 2-1 advantage.

Tarleton State, which put up a dozen hits in the game, would put up nine runs in the bottom of the fifth highlighted by bases-clearing double from Casey Schultz. Alexa Rehmeir got the victory with one inning of relief, fanning two.

Kynleigh Evans (0-2) took the loss, giving up six hits and four runs in four innings.

Eight different Huskies had one hit each in the losing effort, including Haylie Savage, who has hit in five straight games.
