SB: Huskies split pair for second straight day at Whataburger Invitational

HCU wins 10-8 slugfest over South Dakota State, falls to Austin Peay

STEPHENVILLE, Texas--- Houston Christian University split a pair of games for the second straight day in the Whataburger Invitational at Tarleton Softball Complex. HCU won its Saturday opener in a slugfest over South Dakota State 10-8 before falling to Austin Peay State 7-3 in the second game.

HCU collected 21 hits in the two games, led by AB Garcia's five and four apiece from Haylie Savage and Chloe Foster. Kynleigh Evans came on in relief in both games, tossing seven combined innings, scattering eight hits and allowing just one run.

The Huskies will return to action next Friday through Sunday when they travel to Monroe, Louisiana to take part in the Warhawk Invitational hosted by ULM. HCU sandwiches a pair of games against the Warhawks with games against Eastern Illinois University before a Sunday finale against Southern University.

DAY 2 - GAME 1 vs. SOUTH DAKOTA STATE:

After the Jackrabbits scored a single run in their first at-bats, the Huskies bats got a big jump on the early morning. HCU batted around, sending 11 to the plate and plating six runners to take an early advantage.

Hanna York singled to deep second to score AB Garcia, who had doubled to lead off the inning. After Leah Hammack was plunked by a pitch, Makenzie Morris singled to center to load the bases and force a pitching change. Breana Herrera then coaxed a bases-loaded walk to put HCU ahead 2-1.

Two more would score when Chloe Foster singled just past second base, and she would advance to second on an error when the ball got away. One out later, Madison Dominguez drove home her first two collegiate runs with a singled that eeked its way through traffic, scoring Herrera and Foster.

SDSU wouldn't go quietly however. The 'Rabbits put a single tally on the board in the second, then got two more in the third when they loaded the bases and scored on a wild pitch and an RBI groundout to cut the HCU lead to 6-4.

HCU got those runs back in the bottom of the inning on a bases-loaded single by AB Garcia up the middle and a sacrifice fly from Haylie Savage. SDSU responded on a three-run homer by Brooke Dumont, closing to within one, 8-7. The game would then go right back to where it began, all even, after Mia Jarecki was hit by a pitch in the fifth to make the score 8-apiece.

In the last of the fifth, HCU would take the lead back and for good. Dominguez was hit by a pitch leading off and Garcia followed with a walk. Savage then singled through the left side to load the bags again. York would then drop an infield single to second base to plate Dominguez with the go-ahead run, and Keely Castillo's fielder's choice pushed Garcia across the dish for HCU's tenth run of the game.

Kynleigh Evans quieted things down, tossing 2.2 innings of scoreless, two-hit relief to close out the win. She walked one and fanned one in picking up her first win of the season.

AB Garcia posted her seventh career three-hit game to lead an 11-hit offensive attack for HCU, its second straight game with double-digit hits. She went 3-3 with a double, walk, RBI and two runs scored. Chloe Foster went 2-3 with two RBI and two runs, while Hanna York added two hits and two RBI. Makenzie Morris went 2-4 and scored a run while Dominguez drove in two runs.

Brooke Dumont went 4-4 with the homer and four RBI to lead the Jackrabbits (5-2). Starter Akayla Barnard took the loss, going 1.1 innings and giving up six runs.

DAY 2 - GAME 2 vs. AUSTIN PEAY STATE:

The Governors pushed across a run in the first on an RBI double from Kylie Campbell, but the Huskies answered right back. AB Garcia singled to lead off the bottom of the inning, and Haylie Savage chased her around the bases with a triple to right center to even the score.

In the third, Austin Peay staked themselves to a four-run lead. Campbell started the fireworks with a solo homer and a two-run jack from Sam Leski pushed the Govs in front 4-1. Kiley Hinton then doubled in a run to make it 5-1 and force the Huskies into a pitching change, bringing on Kynleigh Evans for the second time in two games. APSU would tack on one more in the inning to go up 6-1 heading to the home half of the third.

With the score 7-1 in the sixth, the Huskies pushed two runs across. Chloe Foster was beaned to begin the inning and Heidi Maytum singled down the right field line. Jocelyn Briseno sacrificed the runners over, and AB Garcia and Haylie Savage followed with consecutive RBI singles to draw HCU to within four, 7-3. HCU would put two on in the seventh, but couldn't scratch anything across.

Savage posted the 12th game of her career with three or more hits, and second on the weekend. She finished 3-4 with a double, triple and two RBI. Garcia, Foster and Maytum each added two hits for the Huskies, who posted double-digit hits for the third straight contest.

Kynleigh Evans posted her second strong relief outing of the day, going 4.1 innings and scattering six hits and one run. Zaria Turner (0-1) took the loss.

Campbell and Hinton each had three hits to lead a 13-hit offense for Austin Peay. Nichols, the second of four pitchers used by the Governors () picked up the win with 2.1 scoreless innings of work.
