SB: HCU drops pair of games on opening day at Husky Field

Huskies return on Saturday for rematch with UNM, homestand finale with ULM

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University opened its 2025 campaign with losses in both ends of a doubleheader, falling to St. John's 5-0 in the opener and then in a pitcher's duel, 1-0, to New Mexico in the second game.

The Huskies, 0-2 on the season, will play the second half of the four-game homestand on Saturday. HCU and UNM will meet again at 10 am, and the Huskies will then wrap up the weekend with a 1 pm matchup with University of Louisiana-Monroe.

The loss to St. John's came in the first meeting ever between the two schools, while New Mexico evened the all-time series at a game apiece. ULM comes into Saturday leading the all-time series 8-1 with the Huskies, with HCU nabbing its first win in the series last year when the two teams split a doubleheader at the Best on the Bayou Classic.

GAME 1 vs. ST. JOHN'S:

HCU fell behind in the second inning, as Elanna Lysiak led off the frame with a homer to left field to give St. John's the early lead. The Johnnies would tack on another run in the third frame as London Jarrard reached, moved up and scored on three consecutive miscues by the Huskies.

Kynleigh Evans worked out of a one-out jam in the fifth to keep the game tight. A single, walk and hit-by-pitch loaded the sacks but the sophomore right-hander was able to induce a ground ball that Haylie Savage threw home for the second out with the relay from catcher Heidi Maytum to first coming just in time to end the inning with no damage done.

A leadoff double in the fifth by Keely Castillo was the first hit of the year for the Huskies, but they weren't able to do anything with it, as Loreley Francia retired the next three batters in order.

The Johnnies extended their lead in the sixth on an RBI double to left by Jordan Bianco and an RBI single by Jarrard. A Natalie Casto single to right center in the seventh drove in Lysiak with the final tally.

HCU managed just two hits from Keely Castillo and AB Garcia. Kynleigh Evans took the loss, going 5.2 innings giving up six hits and three earned runs. Freshman southpaw Zaria Turner made her debut with 1.1 innings, giving up a run and fanning two.

Loreley Francia worked through five innings unscathed, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out six.  Ana Serafinko picked up her first save with two scoreless innings and four strikeouts.

GAME 2 vs. NEW MEXICO:

New Mexico jumped on the board first in the first. After Ashley Archuleta reached on a fielder's choice, Allie Williams walked. Miracle McKenzie then followed with an RBI single up the middle that chased Archuleta home and put the Lobos up 1-0.

That would be the only run of the ballgame, as HCU freshman Leah Hammack and UNM's McKenna Guest locked up in a pitcher's duel.

Hammack was brilliant in her first outing in the circle, allowing just three hits and the one run while walking three and fanning five. Guest allowed just three hits as well, fanning four while issuing three walks.

Haylie Savage, Maddy Bailey, Ella Herrewig and Hammack each picked up hits for the Huskies. McKenzie went 1-3 with the lone RBI for New Mexico.
