SB: Huskies blank Monmouth, fall to Army West Point on first day of Mardi Gras Mambo

HCU plays twice more on Saturday with games against Maine and Iowa State

YOUNGSVILLE, Louisiana --- Houston Christian University split a pair of games on Friday, the first day of the Mardi Gras Mambo at Youngsville Softball Complex. HCU got a strong shutout effort from Cara Pitman in the opener to defeat Monmouth 4-0 before dropping the second game to Army West Point 5-2.

The Huskies are now 4-10 overall on the season and will return to action for two games on Saturday afternoon. HCU faces the University of Maine at 3 pm followed by a 5 pm matchup with Iowa State University.

DAY 1 - GAME 1 vs. MONMOUTH

The two teams traded goose eggs until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Huskies broke the ice with a three-run frame.

Ella Herrewig got things started with a single and advanced to second on an error. After a groundout by AB Garcia, Haylie Savage got a bunt single to put runners on the corners. The Huskies then pulled a double-steal, with Herrewig scoring and Savage moving all the way to third. Savage would then steal home herself, taking advantage of an attention lapse in the infield after the play involving Herrewig.

Chole Foster singled with two outs and came all the way around on a single by Hanna York and an error on the throw, putting HCU up 3-0. The Huskies got a bit of insurance in the sixth when Herrewig singled with one out and later scored on an RBI single through the left side by Savage.

Pitman scattered six hits while going the distance to pick up her second win on the year. She walked three and struck out two while allowing just one extra-base hit.

Herrewig, Savage and AB Garcia each had two hits in the 10-hit attack for HCU.

Samantha Miller and Olivia Smith each had two hits for the Hawks, who fell to 3-12 on the campaign.

DAY 1 - GAME 2 vs. ARMY-WEST POINT:

The Huskies put up two quick runs in their first at-bat against Army. With one out, Savage singled and Maddy Bailey doubled to left to get things started, and Savage would score when Keely Castillo reached on an error. Bailey then came home on an RBI single by Hanna York, staking HCU to a 2-0 lead.

Army would score three times in the fourth to take the lead. Caitlyn Newburn doubled to lead off the inning and came home when Leila Hurst singled to center. Sienna Tepley would then single, and both she and Hurst would score on a two-run single by Emma Murchison that put the Black Knights up.

Two more runs would score in the top of the seventh. Consecutive singles by Taylor Brown and Anna Christiana were chased by a two-run double to left by Ashton White, giving Army all the cushion it needed.

Maddy Bailey went 2-3 for the Huskies, who managed just five hits off Army's Amanda Eaglin. Leah Hammack took the loss, going seven innings and giving up five runs while striking out five.

Taylor Brown led the eight-hit attack for USMA going 2-4 while White and Murchison each drove in two. Eaglin went the distance, giving up the two unearned runs and fanning seven to improve to 2-3 on the season.

Army-West Point improves to 7-5 on the year. The Black Knights will play games against fellow Southland foes SFA and Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday afternoon.
