MONROE, Louisiana --- Houston Christian University lost the opener to Eastern Illinois on Sunday morning before having the afternoon contest against Southern washed out, ending the Huskies run in the
Warhawk Invitational.
HCU is now 3-9 on the season. The Huskies will return to action next weekend when they make their way to Youngsville, Louisiana for the Mardi Gras Mambo. HCU will play five games over three days, beginning on Friday with contests against Monmouth and Army.
DAY 3 - GAME 1 vs. EASTERN ILLINOIS
Looking to avenge a day one defeat, the Panthers put up runs early and often in the second meeting of the tournament. Two runs came across in the first and a third in the second before a huge six-run uprising in the third put the game out of reach.
RBI singles by Briana Gonzalez and Abbi Hatton in the first staked EIU to a 2-0 lead and a bases-loaded walk in the second made it 3-0. Gonzalez contributed the big blow in the third, a bases-loaded triple to right center.
The Huskies tried to get something going in the fifth, loading the bases with no outs, but EIU starter McKenzie Oslanzi worked out of trouble allowing nothing to cross the dish and finish off the shutout victory.
AB Garcia went 3-3, her second three-hit game of the season and sixth of her career, giving her eight career games with three or more hits all told. She also picked up her first stolen base of the season, giving her 40 for her career where she now stands alone in fifth place all-time. She now needs just two to hit fourth place, three for third and four for second.
Keely Castillo added two hits as well while
Zaria Turner took the defeat in the circle, falling to 0-2 on the season.
DAY 3 - GAME 2 vs. SOUTHERN:
Game two was
cancelled in the top of the fourth due to inclement weather.
