WBB: Huskies Falter On the Road, Fall to Islanders

Tiffany Tullis and Erin Maguire lead the Huskies

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Tiffany Tullis posted a double-double and Erin Maguire added 14 points but HCU came out on the losing end of a 74-54 final on Thursday morning in a Southland Conference women's basketball matchup at the American Bank Center.

The two teams went back-and-forth early with a Hannah Fields' layup putting the Huskies (6-18, 3-12 SLC) ahead 8-6 less than five minutes in. The final five minutes of the first quarter were a different story, however, as the Islanders (12-13, 4-10 SLC) scored the game's next 12 points and led 18-8 heading into the second.

Maguire scored on HCU's first two possessions to cut that deficit in half and bring the score to 18-13. The Islanders' Mireia Aguado made a free throw before Maguire knocked down another three followed by a Jo Oly free throw that brought the score to 19-17 with 7:25 left in the half. From there, TAMUCC closed out the half with a 20-8 run, including the final seven points of the half, for a 39-25 halftime lead.

HCU managed to get back within 10 on a pair of occasions in the third, the second of which made it a 45-35 game after a pair of Tullis free throws but the Huskies weren't able to cut it back down to single digits.

Tullis ended the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season, shooting 5-of-6 from the floor and the foul line. Maguire, meanwhile, connected on 6-of-14 from the field for 14 points. Kierra Prim added eight points off the bench for the Huskies.

HCU shot 43.8 percent (21-of-48) from the field as a team while the Islanders hit at a 45 percent (27-of-60) clip from the floor and an impressive 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from beyond the arc.

The Huskies stay in south Texas for their next game this Saturday, Feb. 15, against the UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros in Edinburg, Texas at 2:00 p.m.
