CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – HCU women's basketball will be back in action bright and early this Thursday when the Huskies tip-off at 10:30 a.m. for a Southland Conference matchup against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders inside the American Bank Center.
With just a few weeks left in the regular season, the Islanders (11-13, 3-10 SLC) are in a three-way tie for eighth place in the league standings with the Huskies (6-17, 3-11 SLC) just a half game behind. The top eight teams in the conference standings qualify for the 2025 SLC Tournament.
The two teams faced off in Houston on Jan. 16 with TAMUCC taking a quick 10-2 lead, leaving the Huskies playing catch-up the rest of the game. HCU was able to tie the score a couple of times, including at 49-49 in the fourth quarter, but never got over the hump to take the lead. Junior
Victoria Dixon had a season-high 18 points in the loss for the Huskies, knocking down 8-of-14 from the floor.
HCU is coming off a come-from-behind win over New Orleans this past Saturday that saw the Huskies erase a nine-point deficit with just six minutes left and win by five, 54-49. HCU shot a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor while closing the game with a 19-5 run to down the Privateers.
Tiffany Tullis finished the game with a game-high 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor and pulled down seven rebounds while
Amy Cotton finished with 10 boards.
The Islanders fell on the road to SFA, 74-56, on Saturday with senior Annuka Willstedt scoring a team-best 11 points while Paige Allen just missed out on a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Mireia Aguardo is the team's leading scorer this season, averaging 10.8 points per game while shooting 46.1 percent from the floor.
Following Thursday morning's game the Huskies will travel on to Edinburg, Texas for a Saturday, Feb. 15, game against UT Rio Grande Valley at 2:00 p.m.
