VB: Huskies Fall in Three at UTRGV

Barger posts 11 kills; Hess records double-double in Southland road matchup


CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx. – The volleyball team travels to Corpus Christi on Thursday night to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-15, 5-7) at 6:30 p.m. inside the Dugan Wellness Center.


EDINBURG, Texas — Houston Christian University volleyball dropped a three-set decision at UTRGV on Saturday afternoon, falling 22–25, 17–25, 23–25 inside the UTRGV Fieldhouse. With the result, the Huskies move to 12–15 overall and 7–7 in Southland Conference play.

HCU opened strong in the first set, producing 17 kills on .217 hitting and staying within one possession late. A brief UTRGV scoring stretch pushed the Vaqueros ahead, and the hosts closed the frame 25–22. UTRGV gained early separation in the second set and extended its match lead. The Huskies responded again in the third, remaining within a single point multiple times down the stretch, before the Vaqueros secured the match 25–23.

Katy Barger led the HCU offense with 11 kills on .375 hitting, while Allana Archie and Cassidy Drapela added six kills each. Setter Madison Hess directed the attack with 28 assists and finished with 10 digs for a double-double. Defensively, Bianca Byerly anchored the back row with a team-high 16 digs, and Anna Melgren added 10.

HCU totaled 40 kills in the match and recorded three service aces and 60 team digs. The Huskies posted 17 kills in the opening set, 12 in the second, and 11 in the third.

HCU closes the regular season with two matchups against UIW, first one next Wednesday, November 12 at 6 p.m. in San Antonio, followed by Saturday, November 15 at 1 p.m. at Sharp Gym in Houston. The Huskies will then head to Commerce, Texas, for the Southland Conference Championship, November 20–23.
