VB: HCU falls in four sets at A&M–Corpus Christi

Huskies split late points but Islander attack and fewer errors

CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx. – The volleyball team travels to Corpus Christi on Thursday night to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-15, 5-7) at 6:30 p.m. inside the Dugan Wellness Center.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Houston Christian pushed A&M–Corpus Christi to four sets Thursday night at the Dugan Wellness Center but could not overcome an efficient Islander offense and costly errors in the tight moments of the fourth set. The Islanders closed out a 3–1 victory, 25–16, 25–27, 25–15, 27–25.

The match opened with A&M–Corpus Christi seizing early control. The Islanders built a lead in the first set with a balanced attack and a stingy defense that limited HCU to .114 hitting in the frame. HCU managed only 16 points in the opener as A&M–Corpus Christi closed the set 25–16.

HCU answered in the second set, turning the tide behind a more effective net game and scrappy ball control. The Huskies recorded 17 kills in the stanza and hit .310 to knot the match at one set apiece after a 27–25 win. That set featured multiple momentum swings and was decided in the final exchange, with HCU forcing extra points before closing it out.

A&M–Corpus Christi reasserted itself in the third set, controlling rallies and forcing HCU into uncharacteristic errors. The Islanders posted a 25–15 set win, swinging the match back in their favor and leaving the fourth set as a deciding chapter.

The fourth set played like a tiebreaker, with both teams trading points and the scoreboard tied repeatedly late. HCU fought off several Islander advantages and pushed the frame to extra points, but A&M–Corpus Christi finished the sequence and closed the set 27–25 to secure the match.

Statistically, the Islanders held the edge in attack efficiency and ball control. A&M–Corpus Christi produced 60 kills to HCU's 54 and finished with a .360 team attack percentage against HCU's .191. The Islanders limited their errors (10) compared with HCU's 24, an important differential in tight moments. A&M–Corpus Christi also finished with 73 digs to HCU's 57.

Individually, Allana Archie paced the Huskies with 19 kills while hitting .381; she also added three aces and nine digs. Katy Barger contributed 18 kills and Hannah Redrow added eight. Madison Hess ran HCU's offense with 50 assists and chipped in five digs.

Next up, the Huskies continue Southland play on Saturday, Nov. 8 at UT Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, Texas. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. with coverage available on live stats and stream.
