Houston Christian University hits the midway point of its five-game road stretch as it closes out the month of November with a matinee against Georgia Southern University. Tip-off from Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center in Statesboro is slated for 1 pm CT.
HCU is coming off a split of a pair of games at The Citadel MTE earlier this week, falling late to Bellarmine 74-69 on Tuesday before weathering a late surge for a 72-65 victory over the host Bulldogs on Wednesday night.
The Huskies led by eight midway through the second half after a bucket from
Kylin Green and two charity shots by
Trent Johnson, but Bellarmine stormed back with a 17-6 run. Consecutive triples by Johnson and
Ryan Bartley knotted things at 66, but the Huskies never got over the hump as the Knights held on.
Kylin Green had a career-best 24 points on a personal-high five three-pointers for HCU against Bellarmine.
Elijah Brooks made his season debut and scored 17 points to go with six boards and three assists.
On Wednesday night, the Huskies started and ended strong to hold off the Bulldogs. HCU began the night with a 19-5 run that was finished off by a one-hand hammer by
Mambourou Mara, but The Citadel whittled the lead down to three, 35-32 at the break. A three-point flurry by the hosts knotted the game at 60 with 5:42 to play, but two buckets by Brooks gave HCU the lead back for good, and they hold the Bulldogs to just five points over that remaining stretch to get across the finish line with the hard-earned victory.
Demarco Bethea had a career-high 14 points on 7-7 from the field to lead a quintet of players in double-digits against The Citadel.
Kylin Green had 13 and five assists while
Mambourou Mara had 12 and five boards.
Elijah Brooks scored 11, all in the second half while
Ryan Bartley posted his second straight double-digit night with 10.
Craig Doty, the ninth head coach in program history, is now in his second season at the helm after guiding HCU to a 12-20 overall mark and 9-11 ledger in Southland Conference action in 2024-25. The Huskies doubled their success rate from the previous season, going from six total wins to 12 and from four victories to nine in conference play, finishing seventh in the league after being picked to finish last. HCU advanced to the Southland Tournament and saw
Bryson Dawkins named All-Conference as just the second player in program history to pick up SLC First Team honors.
The Huskies now have a trio of players in double-digit scoring, bolstered by the return this week of
Elijah Brooks, who missed the first four games. He is leading the charge at 14 points per night while also chipping in seven boards, three assists and 1.5 steals.
Kylin Green is just behind him at 13.7 points while also grabbing 5.3 boards and leading the team with 5.8 assists. He had a career-high 24 points in the loss to Bellarmine and registered a career-best 13 assists in the victory over ULM on November 13, the most in a game for HCU since Mike Moss had 13 against Chicago State in 2011.
Johnson is the leading three-point shooter at a 43.3 clip on 13-30 from long range, rounding out the trio of scorers at 11.2 per night. He set and tied his career-high for scoring in consecutive games, scoring 17 against ULM and CBS-Houston. The jack-of-all-trades from Cambridge, Ontario, Canada is also averaging 4.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals.
Mambourou Mara, a junior forward from Conakry, Guinea, is also turning solid all-around numbers for the Huskies, averaging 6.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.8 blocked shots.
Demarco Bethea is right at nine points per game, and after a slow start,
Ryan Bartley had a solid beginning of the week, scoring 21 points in the two games in Charleston to up his scoring average to 6.8 point to go with 3.5 boards.
The Huskies are currently fourth in the NCAA in least fouls per game at 13. They rank 60th in blocks at 4.7 per game and 75th in steals per at 8.7.
Kylin Green is 32nd in the nation in assists per game at 5.8 while
Mambourou Mara is 61st in the country in blocks at 1.8 per game.
The five-game road stretch, the longest of the 2025-26 campaign, hits the midway point after the Huskies cross the state line and on into the Peach State. HCU and Georgia Southern were both members of the Trans America Athletic Conference from 1980-89.
The two teams have met 21 times, with the Eagles holding a 15-6 lead in the all-time series. The last meeting came on November 19, 2022, when GSU defeated HCU 84-77 in Sharp Gym. HCU's last win in the series came on March 7, 1989 when the Huskies won 78-72 in the TAAC Tournament in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Georgia Southern is led by Charlie Henry, now in his third season in Statesboro. The Eagles come on a four-game losing streak after dropping two games earlier in the week at the Jacksonville Classic to Youngstown State and UTSA.
Now 3-5 on the season, the Eagles are averaging right at 80 points per outing, placing four players in double-digit scoring. 6'4 grad guard Spudd Webb averages a team-best 13.9 points and adds four boards, 2.8 assists and two steals per game. Nakavieon White, a 6'7 redshirt senior forward averages 13 and 3.8 rebounds and is followed by 5'11 grad guard Tyren Moore who goes for 12.1 points and 2.4 assists. Alden Applewhite, a 6'7 redshirt senior forward, rounds out the quartet at 13 points and a team-best five caroms per.
HCU is 5-11 all-time on November 29. The most recent outing was also the most recent victory, a 100-62 rout of Southwestern Adventist University in 2022.
The road stretch will continue next week. The Huskies will make the drive north to Denton for a Tuesday night tilt in The Super Pit with the University of North Texas.
