MBB: HCU coasts past College of Biblical Studies

Huskies put four in double-figures; now embark on five-game road stretch



HOUSTON -- Houston Christian University raced out to a 22-point halftime lead and coasted from there, defeating College of Biblical Studies of Houston 85-67 on Thursday night in Sharp Gym. The Huskies led wire-to-wire and by as many as 33, placing four players in double-digit scoring.
 
The Huskies to out to a 10-4 lead on a Demarco Bethea offensive putback. Moments later he would score again before two straight buckets from Demari Williams gave HCU it's first double-figure lead, 19-8 with 12:40 to go in the first half.
 
A dunk by Trent Johnson pushed the lead to 16, 25-9 with eight to play in the first frame. Johnson would give the Huskies a 20-point cushion following a three-pointer and two free throws. Kylin Green then got a fastbreak layup and a three ball that were followed by a Williams jam on a fastbreak, as the Huskies headed to the intermission ahead 45-23.
 
The lead would swell to 26 early in the second half on another pair of charity shots by Johnson. The Ambassadors whittled into the margin, cutting it to 17 on a three-ball by Marquice Scott with 11 to go. D'Aundre Samuels then hit two three-balls and a layup to ignite a 20-5 run that was capped off by a tap-in by Caleb Gaston that gave HCU a comfortable 79-47 lead with 4:44 to go.
 
The Huskies used a commanding 52-28 edge scoring in the paint, including a 20-3 in second chance points. HCU shot 47% from the floor and 75% from the free-throw line and cleaned the glass to a 41-28 edge while forcing 24 turnovers.
 
Trent Johnson led a quartet in double-digits with 17 points, as he matched his career-high set just one game ago. He added five rebounds, three assists and a personal-best four steals.  Demarco Bethea set a career-high with his 13 points and matched a career-best with eight caroms. Kylin Green had 11 points, a career-best eight boards and five assists , while D'Aundre Samuels closed out the group with 10 points, three boards and three assists. Demari Williams had eight points and four boards.
 
Marquice Scott led all scorers with 21 points and added five assists to lead the Ambassadors. Darion Ramos had 16 points while Alvin Kay chipped in seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.
 
HCU is now 3-1 on the season. The Huskies now will embark on a five-game road stretch. The trek begins with a trip to the East Coast for three games that sandwich Thanksgiving Day. HCU will play in The Citadel MTE in Charleston, South Carolina with games against Bellarmine on November 25 and the host Bulldogs on November 26. HCU then travels to Statesboro, Georgia to take on Georgia Southern University to close out November.
 
The road travels will bring the Huskies back to Texas to begin December, heading to the Metroplex for a game against North Texas. The five-game stretch culminates with the Southland Conference opener on December 6 at University of New Orleans.
