HOUSTON – HCU women's soccer hosts UT Rio Grande Valley on Thursday evening at Sorrels Field for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff after picking up its first Southland Conference win of the season this past Sunday over Northwestern State.
HCU (6-5-1, 1-1-1 SLC) evened its SLC record with its 1-0 home victory over the Lady Demons thanks to a goal from freshman
Jasmine Diaz while goalkeeper
Emmy McKeon and the Huskies' defense posted a shutout. McKeon's efforts last week, 10 saves in two matches, earned her SLC Goalkeeper of the Week honors for the second time this season.
Through three games, the Huskies are in a three-way tie for fifth place with four points. Stephen F. Austin sits atop the league standings with eight points, having played one more game than everyone else in the conference.
UTRGV (3-7-1, 0-3-0 SLC) has yet to score a goal in SLC play and is in the midst of a five-match winless streak. Since a 6-0 win over Texas Lutheran, the Vaqueros are 0-4-1 with a 3-3 draw against Texas Southern. Sophomore Lisa Elowsson leads UTRGV with five goals on the year while senior Savannah Frisby has scored four. Emilia Compian has played the majority of the time in goal with a 1.45 goals against average with a save percentage of .667.
The Huskies are seeking their first-ever win over the Vaqueros, owning an 0-1-2 all-time record in the series. Last year, UTRGV defeated HCU, 1-0, in Edinburg.
HCU will hit the road for its next game with a trip to Thibodaux, La. set for Thursday, Oct. 9, against Nicholls at 6:00 p.m.
