BEAUMONT, Texas – HCU finished the first quarter tied but the Huskies' offense stalled over the remaining three quarters as they dropped a 69-29 Southland Conference matchup to the Lamar Cardinals inside Neches Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals (8-4, 3-0 SLC) got out to an early 7-3 lead before
Erin Maguire knocked down a three-pointer to pull HCU (4-9, 1-3 SLC) back within one, 7-6, just over four minutes into the period. The teams then traded buckets and Lamar held a 12-8 lead with 4:47 left in the quarter. The Huskies kept the Cardinals in check the rest of the quarter, keeping them off the board with baskets by
Tiffany Tullis and Maguire closing out the first with the score tied, 12-12.
Lamar scored the first 10 points of the second quarter and out-scored the Huskies, 15-3, for the period to lead 27-15 at the half. The Cardinals then used a 22-point run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Maguire scored eight points to lead the Huskies while Tullis finished the day with six points and nine rebounds.
Jo Oly added eight rebounds for HCU. The Huskies ended the game shooting 24.4 percent (11-of-45) from the floor and were out-rebounded by a 46-33 margin. Lamar shot 40.3 percent (27-of-67) for the game and connected on 50 percent (8-of-16) from three.
The Huskies return to their home floor in Sharp Gym for a four-game homestand beginning this Thursday, Jan. 9, with a visit from the McNeese Cowgirls at 6:00 p.m. followed by a matchup with UIW on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 1:00 p.m.
