THIBODAUX, La. – This Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. the HCU women's basketball team will play its third-straight game in Louisiana when the Huskies take on the Nicholls Colonels inside Stopher Gym in a Southland Conference matchup.
HCU (5-14, 2-8 SLC) is looking to get back in the win column after dropping the first two games of their Louisiana road swing this past Saturday and Monday while Nicholls (13-6, 6-4 SLC) aims to build on a three-game winning streak.
The Huskies fell on Monday evening to league-leading Southeastern, 65-41, with freshman
Kendall Beck scoring a team-best 11 points while connecting on 3-of-5 from three-point range. Sophomore
Lyric Barr added nine for HCU and led the way with six boards.
Since moving into the starting lineup on Jan. 11 against UIW, Beck is shooting an impressive 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the floor with a pair of double-digit scoring performances. Barr, meanwhile, averaged 9.0 points and 6.5 rebounds last weekend to raise her season averages from 3.6 ppg to 4.5 ppg and 2.2 rpg to 3.0 rpg.
The Colonels own a 5-2 record on their home floor this season and sit tied for third place in the league standings after finishing seventh a year ago. This past weekend, Nicholls picked up a pair of road victories at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UT Rio Grande Valley. They began their current three-game win streak with a 75-71 home win over Stephen F. Austin.
Junior guard Tanita Swift leads the Colonels and ranks sixth in the SLC with 14.7 ppg while also totaling 64 assists and 34 steals, ranking in the top-10 in the league in both categories. Deonna Brister is averaging a team-best 5.5 rpg and also shooting 49.6 percent (62-of-125) form the field. Nicholls boasts the SLC's second-best scoring defense, limiting opponents to just 56.5 points per game.
Nicholls has won the last three meetings in the series following a stretch of five-straight wins by the Huskies.
HCU will next head to San Antonio, Texas, more than 500 miles away from Thibodaux, for a Saturday, Feb. 1, contest against the UIW Cardinals at 1:00 p.m.
