VB: Huskies Sweep Kansas City in Straight Sets

Huskies Secure Second Win at the Molly Howard-Gerwig Memorial Tournament with a 3-0 Victory Over Kansas City

HOUSTON – The HCU volleyball team bounced back with a strong performance on day two of the Molly Howard-Gerwig Memorial Tournament, sweeping Kansas City 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-23) on Friday evening at Sharp Gym.

In the opening set, the Huskies (2-3) overcame an early 3-0 deficit with powerful kills by Audrey Pearce, and Cassidy Drapela to even the score. Both teams traded points back and forth, but HCU capitalized on Kansas City (1-4) attack errors to gain a slight advantage. With the set tied at 22-22, a key kill by Ana Garza and an error from the Roos allowed HCU to pull ahead, and Pearce's final kill secured a 25-23 victory in the first set.

The second set saw HCU take an early lead, fueled by kills from Drapela and Pearce, along with a block by Garza and Allana Archie. Kansas City kept the score tight throughout, but several errors from the Roos and a service ace by Bianca Byerly helped the Huskies maintain their edge. Despite a late rally from Kansas City, HCU held firm and secured the set 25-23 following a critical service error by the Roos.

In the final set, HCU continued to maintain an advantage, with Garza and Drapela leading the way with multiple kills. Kansas City responded with a few key plays from Kailee Deffebaugh and Sydney Henry to keep the score close. However, the Huskies maintained their composure and momentum. An ace and decisive kills from Drapela ultimately clinched the set 25-23, completing a well-fought sweep for the Huskies.

HCU's leaders included Ana Garza with 11 kills, Cassidy Drapela with 10 kills and four digs, and Audrey Pearce with seven kills and three blocks. Grace McLaughlin provided 31 assists and 11 digs, while Tatiana Evans led the defense with 14 digs.

The Huskies will play their final match of the tournament tomorrow at 1 p.m. against New Mexico at Sharp Gym.
