VB: HCU Falls to New Mexico in Final Tournament Match

HCU concluded the Molly Howard-Gerwig Memorial Tournament with a challenging match against New Mexico.

HOUSTON, Texas – The Houston Christian University women's volleyball team closed out the Molly Howard-Gerwig Memorial Tournament with a 3-1 loss to New Mexico. The Lobos won the match with set scores of 25-21, 22-25, 25-22, and 25-20.

The Huskies battled hard in the first set, with Ana Garza, Cassidy Drapela, and Audrey Pearce leading the offense. Despite their efforts and a late push featuring blocks from Pearce and kills by Grace McLaughlin, HCU fell 25-21 as New Mexico capitalized on errors and strong performances from Jada Bouyer and Kialah Jefferson.

HCU bounced back in the second set, taking a 25-22 victory. Garza and Pearce's offensive contributions, coupled with solid defensive plays from McLaughlin and Allana Archie, helped the Huskies level the match. Katy Barger's crucial kill clinched the set for HCU.

New Mexico regained control in the third set despite HCU's attempts to close the gap. Service and attack errors hindered the Huskies, and the Lobos secured the set 25-22. In the fourth set, New Mexico's effective serves and kills maintained their lead, ultimately winning 25-20 to end the match.

Ana Garza led with 16 kills, while Audrey Pearce added 12 kills and 6 blocks. Grace McLaughlin provided 46 assists and 17 digs.

HCU's next challenge is the UTRGV Tournament on September 13th in Edinburg, Texas, where they will face San Francisco at 10 a.m. and Texas Tech at 4 p.m.
