VB: Huskies ground rival Islanders to take second straight to open SLC play

HCU has won three in a row, homestand continues next Thursday/Saturday


 
HOUSTON, Texas - The HCU volleyball team clinched their second consecutive victory in the Southland Conference with a win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi today at Sharp Gym. The final scores were 18-25, 25-21, 25-17, and 25-20 in favor of the Huskies.

In a tightly contested first set, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi surged ahead early, with Kyndal Payne and Tori Arrington leading the offensive charge. HCU battled back, fueled by strong kills from Emerald Jacobs and Katy Barger, but struggled to close the gap as Payne's consistent play helped the Islanders maintain their lead. Despite key blocks from Audrey Pearce and Allana Archie, a service ace from Leah Stolfus sealed the set for Corpus Christi, 25-18.

HCU started strong in the second set, quickly taking a 6-1 lead with pivotal kills from Ana Garza, Audrey Pearce, and Emerald Jacobs. Although Corpus Christi attempted to mount a comeback, led by Kyndal Payne and Leah Stolfus, HCU maintained control. With crucial points from Barger and Jacobs, HCU regained the lead after the game was tied at 14-14. As the set progressed, the Islanders stayed competitive, but a block by Pearce on Brooklyn Jaeger secured the set for HCU, 25-21.

In the third set, HCU jumped out to an early lead with key plays from Ana Garza and Allana Archie, pushing the score to 7-2. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi attempted to close the gap, but HCU maintained control, extending their lead to 16-12 with strong performances from Pearce and Jacobs. Despite late efforts from the Islanders, HCU capitalized on multiple errors and finished the set 25-17 with a service ace from Grace McLaughlin, sealing a decisive victory.



The fourth set saw HCU surge ahead with kills from Jacobs and Pearce, establishing an early 2-0 lead. Despite back-and-forth exchanges and some attack errors, HCU maintained momentum, particularly with Jacobs, who ultimately recorded 22 kills in the match. McLaughlin was instrumental as the primary setter, providing 49 assists and contributing defensively with 10 digs. With HCU leading 23-20, pivotal plays from Tatiana Evans and Katy Barger set the stage for Jacobs final kill before Audrey Pearce finished things off with a brick wall to cap the game at 25-20.



Emerald Jacobs led the team with 22 kills, showcasing her offensive prowess, while Katy Barger added 15 kills and Audrey Pearce contributed 9. Grace McLaughlin excelled as the primary setter,recording 49 assists and also contributing defensively with 10 digs, being the only player to register an ace for HCU. On defense, Tatiana Evans was a standout, leading the team with 22 digs, while both McLaughlin and Jacobs supported her efforts with 10 digs each. In terms of blocking, Pearce led with 3 blocks, followed by Allana Archie with 2 and McLaughlin with 1. Overall, HCU's collective effort in both offense and defense was crucial to their success in the match.


The Huskies will next host Stephen F. Austin on Thursday, October 3, at 6:30 PM at Sharp Gym.
