VB: HCU Battles SFA But Falls in Straight Sets

Huskies Battle Hard but Fall to SFA in SLC Showdown

HOUSTON, Texas – The Huskies faced off against SFA in their third Southland Conference match but fell after two consecutive wins. HCU put up a strong fight but ultimately lost in straight sets: 25-23, 25-19, and 25-21.

In the first set, HCU and SFA engaged in a back-and-forth battle, with the Huskies initially taking the lead, thanks to key kills from Audrey Pearce and Emerald Jacobs. SFA, however, rallied with strong performances from Izabella Ortiz and Katherine Holtman. Despite solid efforts from HCU's Grace McLaughlin and Katy Barger, the Ladyjacks capitalized on key errors to close the set 25-23.

The second set started similarly, with HCU gaining the early lead through an Emerald Jacobs kill, but SFA quickly regained momentum. Despite kills from Pearce and Allana Archie, SFA's strong blocking from Kennedy Jones and Ortiz helped them hold their ground, securing the set 25-19.

In the final set, SFA came out strong, building a quick lead, but HCU fought back with kills from Jacobs and Pearce. The teams continued to exchange points, but SFA pulled ahead late in the set with a service ace from Brooklyn Shelton and a kill from Ortiz, taking the set 25-21.

Audrey Pearce led HCU with 15 kills and 3 blocks, while Jacobs contributed 14 kills. Grace McLaughlin was pivotal, recording 40 assists and 12 digs, and Bianca Byerly added 10 digs to support the defense. Despite their efforts, HCU couldn't overcome SFA's consistent play.

The Huskies will next host UTRGV on Saturday, October 5, at 1 p.m.
