VB: Huskies Drop Close Contest Against UTRGV

HCU Fights Hard in Four-Set Thriller Against UTRGV

HOUSTON, Texas – The HCU volleyball team hosted its fourth match of the season against UTRGV. The scores were tightly contested throughout the game. UTRGV won the match with scores of 18-25, 25-18, 25-12, and 31-29. Despite the Huskies' best efforts, UTRGV's resilience ultimately secured the victory. HCU fought hard, but UTRGV capitalized on key plays to win in four sets.

HCU started strong in the first set, battling closely with UTRGV as both teams exchanged points early on. Key plays included kills from Audrey Pearce and Emerald Jacobs, while Grace McLaughlin's assists kept the Huskies competitive. UTRGV's Claudia Lupescu and Ilana De Assis countered with several key kills, and Perris Key's service aces pushed UTRGV ahead. However, HCU's solid blocking efforts from Pearce and Jacobs, along with a clutch kill by Cassidy Drapela, helped the Huskies secure a 25-18 victory.

In the second set, HCU continued their momentum with an early kill from Jacobs, assisted by McLaughlin. However, UTRGV quickly responded, with standout performances by De Assis and a strong block from Elise Fourt. A series of service aces from Perris Key and Isabella Costantini helped UTRGV take control. Despite late kills by Pearce and Drapela, UTRGV closed out the set 25-18.

The third set saw UTRGV dominate early on. Though HCU managed an early lead off a UTRGV service error and a kill by Ana Garza, the Vaqueros responded with strong plays from Lupescu and Costantini, capitalizing on HCU's errors. UTRGV pushed ahead with a commanding 25-12 win.

The final set was a tense back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading kills and errors. HCU fought to stay in the game, with key contributions from Pearce, McLaughlin, and Bianca Byerly. The Huskies closed the gap multiple times, eventually tying the score at 29-29, but UTRGV clinched the set 31-29 after a kill by De Assis.

Audrey Pearce led HCU offensively with 17 kills, while Drapela and Jacobs added 9 and 8 kills, respectively. Pearce also contributed the team's only ace, while Jacobs led with 3 blocks. McLaughlin delivered 41 assists and made a defensive impact with 13 digs, while Tatiana Evans led the team in digs with 14, followed closely by Byerly with 13.

Next up, the Huskies will travel to San Antonio to face UIW on Tuesday, October 8, at 6 PM.
