VB: Huskies fall to UIW in five-set thriller

HCU's strong effort falls just short in a tight match against UIW

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The volleyball team battled hard but fell short in a five-set loss to UIW, with scores of 19-25, 13-25, 25-21, 22-25, and 14-16. HCU showed resilience, winning the third set and pushing UIW to the limit, but key plays by the Cardinals in the final moments secured the match.

In the first set, HCU and UIW traded points early on, with HCU taking a brief lead after kills from Audrey Pearce and Emerald Jacobs. However, UIW responded with strong attacks from Calissa Allison and Finley Evans, pushing them ahead 16-19. HCU fought back with kills from Allana Archie and Ana Garza, narrowing the gap. Despite the Huskies' efforts, a series of errors and a final kill from Allison secured the set for UIW, 25-19.

The second set saw HCU initially gaining momentum, as UIW struggled with attack errors, giving the Huskies a 5-0 lead. UIW bounced back with kills from Evans and Kade Thomas, eventually closing the gap. Despite solid blocks from Pearce and service aces from Avery Psencik, UIW took control of the set, winning it 25-13 with a decisive kill by Thomas and an ace from Anuhea Faitau.
HCU claimed the third set, 25-21, breaking UIW's rhythm. The Huskies started strong with kills from Ana Garza and Audrey Pearce. With contributions from Emerald Jacobs and strong defensive plays, including a service ace by Bianca Byerly and key blocks from Pearce and Peyton Fadal, HCU maintained their advantage and held on to win the set.

In the fourth set, both teams stayed close, trading points and battling through lead changes. Notable kills from Finley Evans kept HCU in the game, but errors allowed UIW to capitalize. A final kill from Ravyn Dash gave UIW the set at 25-22, forcing a deciding fifth set.

The fifth set was a dramatic back-and-forth battle. UIW jumped to an early 3-0 lead, but HCU quickly responded with kills from Jacobs and Evans. With the score tied 11-11, both teams fought for every point. A service error from UIW gave HCU a 14-13 lead, but UIW answered, closing the set and match 16-14, with a final kill by Kade Thomas.

HCU's standout performance was led by Emerald Jacobs, who topped the team with 13 kills and added 3 aces. Audrey Pearce and Ana Garza followed closely with 11 and 10 kills, while Pearce also led with 8 blocks. Peyton Fadal recorded 31 assists, supported by Grace McLaughlin's 12 assists. Defensively, Tatiana Evans anchored the back row with 26 digs, while Bianca Byerly contributed 11.
